CHICAGO – Nine three pointers by the visitors proved to be the difference maker, as the Miami RedHawks (5-1) defeated the UIC women's basketball team (1-5) by a final tally of 65-56 Saturday afternoon. Senior
Brittany Byrd secured her first and the team's first double-double of the season, scoring 13 points and grabbing 10 boards.
First Half Highlights
- Miami scored first with a pair of free throws, but a big offensive board by Jada Nneji converted to a second-chance bucket. Toney swatted the ball out of Miami's hands on their next possession and ran it back for two giving UIC an early 4-2 lead.
- Miami responded with a pair of threes, 8-4, but the Flames were able to come within two after Tylah Lampley connected under the basket, 10-8. The RedHawks sank a pair of jumpers to end the first quarter with a 14-8 lead.
- UIC kept Miami silent through the first three minutes of the second, and closed the gap in the meantime, tying the game at 14. The Flames were able to take back the lead after another skilled layup from Lampley, 16-14.
- The RedHawks remained scoreless until the sixth minute, tying the game at 16 with a layup.
- The Flames entered a drought of their own, while Miami laid up another, 18-16. Lampley got UIC back on the board, tying the game at 18. Still tied at 20 with the clock ticking down to halftime, Miami made a short jumper with seven seconds remaining to head into the locker room up by two, 22-20.
Second Half Highlights
- Miami started out the second half with a trio of threes, widening its lead to seven, 31-24. The gap widened to 10, as the Flames failed to score over the next three-and-a-half minutes.
- A layup by Taylor Toney ignited an 8-0 run for the Flames, putting UIC within a bucket, 36-34. The RedHawks were able to come up with a pair of points from foul shots, but a big three from Kiarra Thompson brought Miami's lead down to just one, 38-37. The Redhawks made two more free throws to end the quarter ahead by three, 40-37.
- Miami started the fourth quarter with a 7-0 run to push the lead back up to 10, but UIC cut it in half after a Lampley Jumper and a Brittany Byrd three, 47-42.
- Another three for Miami made it 52-44, and the Flames struggled to gain ground on the RedHawks from that point, as they answered every UIC bucket with one of their own. The final buzzer sounded with a 65-56 victory for the visitors.

- The Flames spread the ball around on offense, with three players scoring in double figures for the first time this season. Tylah Lampley led the way with 15 points, followed by Brittany Byrd with 13 and Kiarra Thompson with 11.
