Late Effort Comes up Short for UIC

Flames fall 60-53 at Indiana State

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – UIC's 23 points in the fourth quarter proved not enough on Saturday afternoon as the Flames (2-6) fell 60-53 to Indiana State (5-3). UIC committed a season-high 32 turnovers, which accounted for over half of the Sycamores' 60 points (32).

First Half Highlights
  • The Flames scored first off a short jumper from Jada Nneji, and they kept the Sycamores from scoring through the first three minutes. Tied at two, the Flames scored four thanks to another bucket from Nneji and Brittany Byrd's first make of the day.
  • Indiana State used a jumper and a three to take the lead, 9-8, but the Flames applied good defensive pressure, forcing three turnovers and turning it into a 6-0 run. The Sycamores were able to cash in on a pair of free throws in the final minute, making it a 14-11 UIC lead after the first 10 minutes.
  • Both teams were only able to sink one apiece through the first half of period two, 16-13. The Sycamores offense erupted in the final five minutes, sinking four consecutive three-point attempts for a 25-20 lead at the half.
Second Half Highlights
  • The Flames were able to reduce the lead to three, 27-24, but the Sycamores created more distance with another triple, 30-24. Two more Indiana State threes and the lead extended into double digits, 37-26.
  • A layup by Taylor Toney and a make at the charity stripe got the deficit back in the single digits, 37-30, but a 6-0 run with another Indiana State three put the Sycamores ahead 43-30 after three periods of play.
  • UIC threatened with a 10-2 run to start the fourth, 45-40. The Sycamores made a trio of free throws, but the Flames were within three after a Brittany Byrd triple, 48-45.
  • With both teams in bonus, Indiana State made two perfect trips to the line and followed it up with a three to put its lead back at 10, 56-46.
  • The Flames would not be able to close the gap from there, falling 60-53.
