CHICAGO – The UIC women's basketball team (7-18, 0-14 HL) will prepare for its final road test of the regular season, taking on the Golden Grizzlies of Oakland (11-14, 4-10 HL) on Saturday, Feb. 17 at 2 p.m. CT at the Blacktop at the O'rena in Rochester, Mich.
The Golden Grizzlies were victorious in the first meeting of the season between the two teams, 67-63. The Flames put up 28 points in the third quarter after facing a 16-point hole, but were ultimately unable to hold off Oakland.
Starting Five
- Gabryelle Johnson notched her fourth double-double of the season on Thursday at Detroit Mercy, tabbing 14 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Flames in both categories.
- Taylor Toney was also in double figures against the Titans with 12 points, marking her seventh-straight game in double-digits.
- Tia Tedford recorded 10 points, which was her second-straight game in double figures, as well as her second-consecutive game in the starting five. Â Tedford also matched her career-best in rebounds with four.
- Teodora Zagorac brought in nine rebounds for the Flames on Thursday, four of which were on the offensive side.
- The Flames are second in the Horizon League in turnovers forced and fifth in the conference in steals, averaging 8.6 thefts per contest. UIC's 18.2 average of turnovers forced ranks it 74th in the nation.
Last Time Out
- UIC was taken down 73-60 on the road against Detroit Mercy on Thursday. After leading at the half, the Titans put up 33 points in the third quarter to run away from the Flames.
- UIC outrebounded Detroit Mercy by an astounding 51-35, and its 51 boards were its second-highest total of the season.
- The Flames also matched their season-high second chance points with 25, coming off 25 offensive boards, just one shy of their season-high mark, while holding Titans to a mere 2 offensive rebounds.
Notes on the Golden Grizzlies
- The Golden Grizzlies fell 73-55 to second-place IUPUI on Thursday.
- Oakland was led by Taylor Jones's 16-point effort off the bench, while Cierra Bond and Taylor Gleason also finished in double figures with 15 points and 12 points, respectively. Leah Somerfield led the squad with 10 rebounds, while Nikita Telesford also added a solid effort with eight points.
- The Golden Grizzlies are just two for their last 10, and are looking to snap a five-game skid.
- Oakland is the only team superior to the Flames in the offensive rebounds category, as it averages 17.1 per game.
- The Golden Grizzlies are also the top team in the Horizon League in steals, averaging 10.2 per contest.
- Oakland is also second in the conference in three-point field goal defense (.293), blocked shots (3.8 per game), assists (14.5 per game) and three-point field goals made (7.2 per game).Â
- Leah Somerfield leads the Golden Grizzlies in rebounds, and is third in the conference overall, averaging 7.9 per game.
- Oakland's leader in assists is Taylor Gleason, and she is the runner-up in the Horizon League in the category, averaging 4.8 helpers per game.
