BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The UIC softball team (11-8) was dealt an 8-4 loss to Indiana (7-21) in Sunday's finale of the Hoosier Classic. The Flames had an explosive fourth inning, but were unable to get a run across the plate elsewhere, allowing the home team to take an 8-4 victory.
UIC puts a wrap on the Hoosier classic, going 1-4 on the weekend.
Kayla Wedl paced the Flames hit output with six hits across the five games, while
Alyssa Griman,
Taylor Cairns and
Lexi Watts all tabbed five hits.
Emily Wetzel finished the weekend with a .400 average with a double and four RBI, and
Skylee James batted in three as well.
Highlights
- A single and a walk set the stage for Indiana's Maddie Westmoreland in the bottom of the third inning, as she knocked in a three-run home run to put Indiana on the board first.
- Claire Crane was hit by a pitch toÂÂÂÂÂ start the fourth and advanced to second on a wild pitch, when Griman put a single through the left side to give the Flames their first run of the afternoon. Three-straight singles from Wedl, Cassie Kaelber and Wetzel brought in two more, tying the game at three. Watts kept the hit parade coming with a single to right, forcing Indiana to make a pitching change, and the bases loaded, James drew a walk to bring in Kaelber, giving the Flames a 4-3 advantage.
- The Hoosiers used two hits and back-to-back fielder's choices to re-establish their three-run buffer, putting up four runs of their half of the fourth for a 7-4 lead.
- Indiana tacked on another run in the fifth with two outs, as a single to the pitcher stole second and came around to score off an up-the-middle single.
- Griman singled up the middle with two outs in UIC's final at bat in the seventh, but was left stranded, giving Indiana the 8-4 win.
Facts & Figures
- Both Watts and Griman went 2-for-4, with Griman also grabbing an RBI. Wetzel was a perfect 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs. Wedl and Kaelber also recorded one hit apiece.
- Karissa Frazier got the start and saw 2.1 innings of work, giving up four hits and three earned runs while striking out two. Allie Trudeau came on in relief, pitching 3.2 innings and giving up seven hits, five earned runs and striking out four.
