Flames Dispatch Raiders for First League Win

Team Ends Horizon League Drought Dating to 2016

The UIC Flames earned their first Horizon League victory of the season by taking down Wright State 5-2 at XS Tennis Village Friday afternoon.  The Flames evened their conference record at 1-1 behind strong, straight-set wins up and down the singles lineup.

Doubles Results
  • The Flames' #1 pair of Marcelo Dib and Niko Wasilewicz faltered out of the gate and dropped a 6-3 set.
  • Johan Hedstrom and William Wale evened the doubles standings with a 6-4 win on the #2 court.
  • Kailash Panchapakesan and Marco Nanni won the doubles point for UIC, taking down Wright State's #3 team 6-4.
  • "We had a solid performance in doubles," head coach Hans Neufeld said.  "Kailash and Marco pressed and took the doubles point.  Johan served well in doubles and William closed out at the net."
Singles Results
  • The Raiders quickly evened the match by winning on the #1 court, 6-2, 6-2 over Wasilewicz.
  • The Flames seized momentum with wins at #5 by Panchapakesan, 6-2, 6-2; and at #4 by Nanni, 6-0, 6-2.
  • Hedstrom earned the team's fourth and match-clinching point with a 6-3, 6-4 win in the #2 flight.
  • Wright State salvaged another point at #3 where Dib fell 6-2, 6-3.
  • Wale wrapped up the match with a 7-5, 6-2 win at #6.  "It was a great team effort to win down the line in singles," Neufeld said.
