Offensive Surge Secures Series Sweep over IUPUI

UIC wins game one 12-7, and game two 11-0 (5)

CHICAGO – The UIC softball team (17-15, 6-3) utilized a high-powered offense on Wednesday afternoon sweep the doubleheader, and the series, against IUPUI (10-23, 6-8 HL). The Flames soundly defeated the Jags 12-7 in game one before run ruling the visitors in game two, 11-0 (5).

The Flames combined for an impressive 24 hits between the two games, and had a historic performance in game one, tying the program record for home runs with five, a record that was set over two decades ago in 1997. UIC's 15 hits in the first contest were a season best, as were its runs scored (11).

Game One Highlights
  • UIC's bats got off to a hot start early, putting up a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning off a Skylee James homerun. Lexi Watts had previously hit a leadoff single to get on board, and was brought in on the bomb from James.
  • The Flames extended their lead to five in the next inning, as James came up to the plate again and doubled with the bases loaded to clear the bags.
  • IUPUI threatened in the top of the third, tacking on four runs by way of a walk, a single, a double and a home run, but Kayla Wedl responded for UIC in the bottom of the inning with a two-run bomb to give the Flames some breathing room and a 7-4 lead.
  • Two hits and a sacrifice fly gave the Jags one in the fourth, and an untimely hit by pitch in the fifth with the bases loaded once again put IUPUI within one, 7-6.
  • Alyssa Griman opened UIC's half of the fifth with a solo shot, and Taylor Cairns later singled down the left field line with two on to once again add a pair of insurance runs for the Flames, 9-6.
  • Another hit by pitch, a walk, and a UIC error in the top of the sixth led to a bases loaded situation for IUPUI, and a fielder's choice to Wedl out at shortstop allowed the Jags to get one across the plate.
  • The Flames kept the hit parade coming in the bottom of the sixth, as Tiana Mack-Miller added her name to the list with a solo shot over the left-field wall. Griman stepped up next and doubled, and Wedl kept the two-out rally alive with her second bomb of the game, effectively handing UIC the win.

Game Two Highlights
  • UIC strung together a trio of hits to get one across the plate in the first, as Watts and James singled and Griman found the hole in left center for an RBI double.
  • The Flames put up a crooked number in the second, as it was James and Wedl again, each with a three-run blast. Willis opened the inning with a walk, and Spinks singled to the infield to put two on for James, who unloaded the ball into left field. Mack-Miller was hit by a pitch and Griman drew a walk to put two on again for Wedl, who put her third ball of the day over the fence. UIC led 7-0 after just two innings of play.
  • The Flames sealed the deal in the third, as James singled with Spinks and Watts on board, allowing Spinks to come around from second. Mack-Miller brought in Watts and James with a three-run shot, her second of the day, to put the game to rest at 11-0.
