Flames Come up Short against City Rival DePaul

UIC falls 3-1

CHICAGO – The UIC softball team (20-17) finished off its non-conference schedule Friday afternoon with a 3-1 loss to city-foe DePaul (25-13). The Flames were able to strike first, but the offense soon went cold, as a two-run homer in the bottom of the third proved all the Blue Demons would need.

Game Highlights
  • Kayla Pociejewski led off the top of the third for UIC with the first hit of her career, moved to second on a grounder from Lexi Watts, and continued on to third on a wild pitch. Taylor Cairns batted a deep fly ball to center, allowing Pociejewski to tag up and score her first collegiate run, giving the Flames the 1-0 lead.
  • DePaul got the leadoff runner on base in bottom of the inning, and a home run to right field two batters later quickly put the lead into the hands of the home team, 2-1.
  • A leadoff double for the Blue Demons in the fourth stole third and continued on to score on a UIC error, 3-1.
Facts & Figures
  • The Flames offense was contained to just five hits, led by designated player Jasmine Willis's two. Skylee James, Kayla Wedl and Pociejewski combined for the remaining three. The single for James extends her hitting streak to 11 games, which continues to be a career high. Cairns tallied the lone RBI for the Flames on the sacrifice fly in the third.
  • Marley Hanlon got the start but was dealt the loss to move to 3-3 on the season. Hanlon allowed two runs four hits through 3.0 innings of work. Allie Trudeau pitched 2.0 innings and allowed one run on two hits and Karissa Frazier pitched the final inning and was lights out for the Flames.
