Flames Drop Tight Match to Youngstown State

Penguins Use Tiebreakers to Claim 5-2 Win

Youngstown State claimed a 5-2 win over UIC men's tennis Saturday afternoon at Homewood-Flossmoor Racquet Club.  A third-set win in one singles match and a tiebreaker in another both went the way of the Penguins and proved to make the difference in a hard fought match.  The Flames fell to 3-3 in Horizon League play with one match remaining.

  • Panchapakesan ran into a strong foe at #5 and fell 6-1, 6-1.
  • Youngstown State made it 3-0 after the #3 match went their way, 6-3, 7-6 over Marco Nanni, who was unable to force a third set in the tiebreaker.
  • Piotr Lada, inserted into the singles lineup for the first time since the season opener against Michigan State, won his match in the #6 flight, 7-6, 6-1.  "Piotr played solid tennis on short notice," head coach Hans Neufeld said.
  • The Flames got back to within one, 3-2, when Dib dispatched his opponent 6-3, 6-3 on the #4 court.  He battled back from 3-1 down in the second set to win five straight games.
  • Hedstrom forced a third set in his #1 match, but YSU's Danylo Veremeichuk clinched the match for his team with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 win.
  • Wasilewicz won an epic tiebreaker in the second set at #2, where he fought off a match point, but eventually fell, 6-3, 6-7 (7), 6-3.

  • The Flames will close out the regular season Sunday afternoon against Cleveland State.
