INDIANAPOLIS -- Derrick Patrick became the latest member of the UIC Flames to earn weekly recognition from the Horizon League when he was selected as the conference's Batter of the Week on Monday, April 23. This is the ninth individual award that the Flames have received this season, more than any other club in the League.
Patrick batted .500 (6-of-12) and got on base at an eye-popping clip of .700 in four games as he helped UIC to a perfect 4-0 week that included an Horizon League road sweep at Northern Kentucky. He batted in the leadoff spot in all games and set the table at the top of the lineup for an offense that averaged 13.3 runs per game during the week and scored a total of 53 times in the four victories. The Westinghouse High School product led the Flames in runs (8), walks (8), stolen bases (2). He also drove in four runs and racked up 10 total bases as half of his six hits went for extra-bases.
In the first game of the week, a midweek win over Viterbo, Patrick walked twice and scored twice in three plate appearances during a 17-1 triumph. In the series opener at NKU on Friday, the Chicagoan collected three hits to match a career high, and notched a pair of doubles in a convincing 14-5 win. Patrick then got on base five times with two hits and a career-high three walks in the series-clinching 11-6 win on Saturday afternoon. In the series finale, he hit his first triple of the season and it drove in a pair of runs to help UIC cruise to an 11-2 win and the series sweep of the Norse.
Patrick is the seventh different UIC player to earn one of nine weekly recognitions from the League this season. Between
Ryan Campbell,
Reid Birlingmair and
Charlie Cerny, the Flames had the Pitcher of the Week in each of the season's first four weeks.
Scott Ota has twice been named Batter of the Week (Feb. 19 and March 5), while
Alex Dee (March 19) and
Dominic Smith (March 26) have also been honored this spring.
Though he battled injuries after crashing into a wall making a highlight reel catch at UTRGV during the first month of the the season, Patrick has returned to the lineup with a fury. In seven games since coming back into the regular lineup on April 7, Patrick is hitting .440 (11-of-25) with an on-base percentage of .576. He has 11 hits and five that have gone for extra bases during that stretch. Patrick has scored 11 times since April 7, four more than any other player on the roster.
The Flames return to action on Tuesday, April 24, when they will host Northwestern under the lights at Granderson Stadium. It is the first primetime game of the season at home and the first pitch it scheduled for 6:05 p.m. CT.
