Flames Take Series from Wright State in Thrilling Fashion

UIC run rules game one, takes game two in extra innings

CHICAGO – The UIC softball team (25-18, 14-4 HL) took home a pair of thrilling victories over Wright State (15-30, 9-10 HL) on Saturday afternoon to take the series 2-1. The Flames run-ruled the Raiders in game one, 11-1 (5), and took home an extra-innings victory in game two, 3-2 (9).

UIC outhit the Raiders 17-7 across the two games, as six Flames ended the day with multi-hit performances. Lexi Watts, Kayla Wedl and Skylee James knocked three hits apiece, while Tiana Mack-Miller, Taylor Cairns and Claire Crane ended the afternoon with two each. Alyssa Griman tallied one hit, a three-run bomb in game one over the right field fence as part of a nine-run third inning.

Game One Highlights
  • Lexi Watts got on base with a bunt single to start UIC in the first and stole second. Two outfield flies allowed Watts to tag up and score one for the Flames, 1-0.
  • The Flames tallied an incredible nine runs in the third inning to seal the fate of the game. UIC put in seven of its 10 hits in the third alone, and also took advantage of a pair of Wright State errors. Crane singled with one out and Watts laid down another bunt, making it all the way to third on a throwing error that allowed Crane to score. James put a triple down the right field line, scoring Watts. Mack-Miller drew a walk and stole second, and Griman cleared the bags with her fourth homerun of the season. With the bases free, Wedl singled, Jasmine Willis walked, and Marley Hanlon stepped in to pinch hit, laying down a single to the short stop to add another run, and Crane doubled in her second at bat of the inning to bring in two more. Crane moved on to third on a wild pitch, and was able to cross the dish after a fielding error by the Raiders during the Watts at bat. By the end of the inning, the Flames would own a 10-0 advantage.
  • Wright State recorded its sole run of the game in the top of the fourth. The Flames attempted to throw out a runner headed to third after making an out at first, but the throw was off, allowing the runner to take home.
  • UIC answered back with another run in the fourth after James led off with a single and came around to score on a triple off the bat of Mack-Miller.
Game One Facts & Figures
  • Watts, James and Crane had two hits in the first game alone. Mack-Miller, Griman, Wedl, Willis and Maddie Spinks all recorded one each. Griman's homer gave her three RBI in the game, while big hits from Mack-Miller and Crane gave them two RBI apiece.
  • Allie Trudeau got the start and was lights out for the Flames, pitching three innings while allowing just one run and three hits in five innings.
Game Two Highlights
  • UIC jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Watts lead off with a walk and James found the gap in right center. Both runners advanced on a passed ball and a ground out batted in Watts.
  • A leadoff walk for the Raiders gave UIC some trouble, as the next batter walked and the following batter was hit by a pitch to load the bases. A single up the middle brought in two runs, allowing Wright State to take over the lead, 2-1.
  • The Flames were unable to tie the game until the seventh. Wedl singled to start, and the pinch-hitting Cassie Kaelber reached on a fielder's choice. An error in an attempt to take out Wedl at second put two on and nobody out for Cairns, who doubled into right field against the Raiders' shift, scoring Wedl and tying the game at two all.
  • It was Wedl again to start things for the Flames in the bottom of the ninth, and Cairns hit a ball up the middle that deflected off the pitcher, leaving the Raiders unable to make the play. Spinks hit a grounder to the third baseman, who made a fielding error, allowing Wedl to come around and score all the way from second.
Game Two Highlights
  • The Flames collected seven hits in game two, as Wedl and Cairns tabbed two apiece. The remaining hits came off the bats of Watts, James and Mack-Miller. Cairns and Mack-Miller collected UIC's two RBI in the game.
  • Karissa Frazier was spectacular, pitching all nine innings and allowing just four hits and two earned runs. The redshirt-junior struck out a career-high 10 batters in the performance.
