UIC’s Impressive Season Draws to a Close at Horizon League Championship

Flames fall 4-0 to Youngstown State

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The No. 1 UIC women's tennis team (15-7, 9-2 HL) had its season come to a close on Sunday with a 4-0 loss to No. 2 Youngstown State (16-10, 10-1 HL) in the Horizon League Championship. The Flames wrap a successful year that saw their second-straight regular season title as well as their first trip to the Championship match since 2013.

DOUBLES HIGHLIGHTS
Georgie Sanders and Lejla Colic battled Sofia Macias and Tamara Teufl in the No. 1 match and were edged 6-4. Viktoria Seifert and Miranda Rodriguez Diaz de Leon faced the same fate at No. 3, falling 6-4 to Ana Stroe and Anastasiia Khokhlova, giving the Penguins a 1-0 lead. The No. 2 match between Melika LeBlanc/Rachel Le Comber and Noelly Longi Nsima/Imaan Hassim was tight at 6-5 before going unfinished.

SINGLES HIGHLIGHTS
Teufl brought down Seifert 6-0, 6-3 at No. 5, and Hassim bested Le Comber at No. 4, 6-2, 6-3 to put YSU one point away from the title. In the No. 3 match, LeBlanc fought back after dropping the first set to take the second and force the third set against Khokhlova, but ultimately lost 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, allowing the Penguins to take the match. The No. 1 match between Colic and Nsimba was in the third set (6-4, 3-6, 2-2) before it went unfinished. The No. 2 match featuring Sanders and Macias was at 7-6 (7-4), 1-3, before going unfinished, and the No. 6 match with Bianca Zuzu and Cassandra Moraleja also went unfinished at 6-3, 3-1.
