Flames Advance to #HLSB Title Game with 7-4 Win over IUPUI

UIC will make program’s 14th Championship game appearance

CHICAGO – The UIC softball team (32-18) will play in the Horizon League Championship game for the 14th time in program history tomorrow after defeating IUPUI 7-4 Friday afternoon. The Flames won their ninth-straight game and will seek its second-straight Horizon League title tomorrow at 12 p.m. CT inside Flames Field.

Game Highlights
  • Jasmine Willis led off the bottom of the second with a single, and moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt from Cassie Kaelber. Claire Crane put a high fly into shallow left that dropped right by the foul line, scoring Willis and giving the Flames the first run of the game.
  • UIC grew the lead to six in the bottom of the fourth, starting with Willis drawing a walk with one out. Maddie Spinks put a slow-moving ball in the infield for a single, and Crane was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Kayla Wedl and Taylor Cairns both drew walks to bring in a pair of runs, and Tiana Mack-Miller cleared the bases with a double, bringing in another three runs for UIC.
  • The Flames added another run in the bottom of the sixth. Cairns put a single in center, and Mack-Miller doubled again, putting runners on second and third. Alyssa Griman drew a walk, and after a 14-pitch at bat, Willis also drew a walk, scoring Cairns.
  • The Jags took away the shutout in the top of the seventh after a pair of bases-loaded errors gave way to four runs. The Flames were finally able to end the game with a grounder that Wedl fielded and sent over to James at first.  
Facts & Figures
  • The Flames tallied eight hits in the victory, with Mack-Miller and Spinks combining for half with two each. Cairns, James Willis and Crane were responsible for the remaining four.
  • Marley Hanlon started in the circle for the Flames and earned her fifth win of the season. She allowed four hits in 5.0 innings, while striking out two. Karissa Frazier came in to finish the remaining two innings, allowing two hits and four unearned runs.
