Flames Start 2018 Season with Sweeping Success

UIC defeats Bryant 3-0

CHICAGO – The UIC volleyball team (1-0) opened the 2018 season with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-20) sweep over Bryant (0-1) on Friday evening inside the Flames Athletic Center.

Match Highlights
  • Set One: The Flames jumped out to a 16-10 lead to start, but the Bulldogs came within two after a service error, and ace and a pair of UIC errors.
  • Set One: The Flames' cushion grew again, 21-16, but Bryant struck with four straight points to come within one, 21-20.
  • Set One: Kills from Alexandria Hicks and Ali Witt put the Flames up by three, but the Flames would end up on top of set one, 25-22.
  • Set Two: UIC started set two down 11-7, but six straight points turned the tides in favor of the Flames, 14-11.
  • Set Two: Bryant answered, taking the next three to tie the set at 14, but the Flames exploded with a 9-0 run that included four blocks.
  • Set Two: The Bulldogs cut the lead in half by taking the next five points, but UIC finished set two with a 25-20 victory.
  • Set Three: Set three was close, as neither team led by more than three until the Flames took the final three points to capture a 25-20 win. The third and final set saw 10 tie scores.
Facts & Figures
  • The Flames out blocked the Bulldogs 10-3, six of which came in the second set alone. Tatyana Ndekwe and Hicks held the largest presence at the net, collecting seven and six blocks, respectively.
  • Kiera James led UIC's offensive front with 15 kills to lead all players.
  • Witt hit .667 with seven kills and just one error. Ndekwe hit at clip of .545 with six kills while being error free.
  • Manuela Conte collected 14 digs to lead UIC, followed closely by Marija Borcic with 13.
  • Borcic also led the match with 25 assists.

  • The Flames will wrap up their home invitational tomorrow with matches against Maryland Eastern Shore (12 p.m. CT) and Central Michigan (7 p.m.).
