UIC Edged by Indiana State, 1-0

Birkenhead, Pallo and Douglas make up Flames 12 shots

CHICAGO – UIC could not come back from an unfortunate goal scored by Indiana State on Wednesday night as it fell to the Sycamores, 1-0, at Flames Field.

The Flames combined for their second highest shot total of the season with 12 as all of the attempts were contributed by Keri Birkenhead (5), Rebeca Pallo (5) and Tamae Douglas (2). Of their looks, only two were put on goal by Douglas and Pallo.

Goalkeeper Tara Khayam was only challenged on two occasions as Indiana State recorded an opponent low for the season with seven shots and two on goal.

The result put the Flames at 0-5-0 while the Sycamores collected their second win to go 2-2-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The pace of the first 20 minutes of the match was in favor of the Flames as they controlled possession and attempted five shots divided between Birkenhead and Pallo, who combined for seven shots in the first half. It was Pallo who came back on the opposite end of the field and came up with the sliding tackle to take away the Sycamores first quality look of the match in the 20th minute.
  • On just its second shot of the match, Indiana State went up 1-0 as Caitlyn Eddy sent in a corner kick that was sent out by a defender but was picked up by Camryn DeGrafft at the top of the 18 and shot in over a leaping Khayam.
  • After Khayam made her only save of the match in the 67th minute, Douglas put UIC's first shot on goal two minutes later. Pallo then came out with just over 10 minutes to play and had her look from distance fall in the gloves of the Indiana State keeper.

NOTABLES
  • The Flames used their fourth different starting rotation of the season with seven underclassmen in the mix.
  • UIC's 12 shots marked the second time this season it had 10-plus attempts as well as the second time it outshot its opponent.
  • Birkenhead's five shots was a career high for the sophomore, surpassing her previous mark of four.
  • The one goal scored by Indiana State was the fewest goal allowed by the Flames this season.

NEXT UP
  • The Flames close out their homestand on Sunday when they meet with Illinois State at 3 p.m. CT at Flames Field.
