Flames Taken Down in OT by Cleveland State

UIC limited to three shots

CLEVELAND – For just the second time this season, it took more than 90 minutes for a match to be decided for the Flames. However, it was Cleveland State who converted for the golden goal in the 94th minute Saturday afternoon to take a 1-0 win at Krenzler Field.

A mere three shots were taken by UIC as it was shut out for the second straight match. The three attempts went to Emily Kavanaugh, Rebeca Pallo and Jennifer Saviski. Kavanaugh and Pallo had their looks saved while Saviski had hers veer wide.

Haley Leanna got the call for the seventh straight match. While the Vikings attempted 10 shots, the second lowest total she has been faced with this season, she made three saves.

With five conference matches still to play, the Flames are now 2-11-0, 1-3-0 HL, on the year while CSU goes to 7-4-1, 3-0-1 HL.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The attack of Cleveland State came early as it got off three shots, all off the mark, in the first 10 minutes and pressured twice but was called offsides. Both teams were then held off before Kavanaugh recorded the Flames first attempt of the game in the 21st minute with a shot on goal.
  • After Leanna made her first save of the match in the 31st minute, Pallo followed on the opposite end three minutes later with another look on net for the only other shot of the half for UIC. Two more attempts came for the Vikings, including one with less than five to go that forced Leanna to make a diving stop.
  • The first shot of the second half did not come until the 64th minute when Saviski sent a look wide. UIC was then held off the rest of the way while CSU scattered three attempts, including one that was stopped by Leanna and another off a free kick just outside the 18 that skimmed over the net.
  • Still scoreless after 90 minutes, the match went to overtime. In the 94th minute of play, CSU's Ashley Thiss played a low through ball to McKenna Vento, who was able to shoot the ball as Leanna was coming out and send it into the right side of the net for the game winner.

NOTABLES
  • For the third straight game and 10th time this season, UIC had a new set of players to start the match.
  • The Flames' shot total was less than five for the third time this season. They were previously limited to four against UC Santa Barbara (Aug. 19) and Central Michigan (Sept. 16).
  • It is the first time this season UIC has gone consecutive games without scoring.
  • The loss was the first against Cleveland State since 2014 as the Flames had won three consecutive.

NEXT UP
  • The Flames continue their stint on the road Wednesday when they close out non-conference action against the Crusaders in Valparaiso, Ind. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. CT at Brown Field.
