Flames Drop 3-0 Decision at Western Michigan

UIC secure double-digit shot total for third straight game

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – UIC's effort to hold off Western Michigan on Friday was not enough as it took a 3-0 loss at the WMU Soccer Complex to begin its road weekend in Michigan.

For the third straight game, the Flames reached double digits in their shot total with 10 against the Broncos. Emily Kavanaugh (3), Tamae Douglas (2), Naomi Rushe (2), Jessica Christmas (2) and Alliyah Parker made up the total. Of their attempts, five came on goal from Kavanaugh (2), Douglas (2) and Christmas.

Haley Leanna received her first collegiate start in goal and played the complete game. While three goals were allowed, she made five saves as WMU took 19 shots on the night.

The loss pushed UIC to 0-7-0 on the season while the Broncos improve to 5-1-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The eventual game-winner for WMU came just 98 seconds into the game on its first shot attempt as Bailey Kohorn evaded the UIC defenders and scored. The Broncos added nine more shots in the first half, forcing Leanna to make three of her saves, while the Flames turned out four attempts.
  • Despite Douglas putting the first look of the second half on goal, it was WMU who scored again in the 54th minute as Hannah Kahn took a feed from Grace Labadie to put her team in a 2-0 position.
  • UIC tried to push back, taking four shots with two being put on goal, but the Broncos notched their third and final goal in the 71st minute on a run from Morgan Otteson. The Flames would have just one more look at the goal in the final 20 minutes as Christmas sent the ball wide.

NOTABLES
  • UIC saw its sixth different set of starters this season with Alliyah Parker making her first start in a Flames kit. Naomi Rushe returned to action for the first time since facing UMKC (Aug. 24).
  • Kavanaugh's shot output marked her second straight game with three attempts and two on goal.
  • Leanna became the first freshman goalkeeper to play a complete game since Tara Khayam did so against Chicago State in 2016.

NEXT UP
  • The Flames will close out the weekend Sunday over in Ypsilanti, Mich., where it will challenge Eastern Michigan at noon CT at Scicluna Field.
