Shooting Woes Sink Flames against YSU

UIC falls 81-29 in Horizon League road opener

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Shooting woes for the Flames gave way to a season-low 29 points and 19.3 percent shooting as the UIC women's basketball team (2-12, 0-3 HL) fell 81-29 at Youngstown State (11-3, 3-0 HL) on Thursday night.

First Half Highlights
  • The Penguins scored in the first 10 seconds off a layup, and then sank a three for a 5-0 lead. Kiarra Thompson got UIC on the board with a three, but the Flames would not score again until the final minute of the quarter with a deep jump shot off the hands of Catera Etheridge.
  • Youngstown State rattled off 16 unanswered points during UIC's drought for a 23-5 lead after the first 10 minutes.
  • The Flames shooting woes continued in the second, making just two of their 18 shots in the first six minutes. The Penguins lead grew in the meantime, and they held a 50-11 advantage at the half.
  • UIC ended the first half making just 17.9 percent of their shots, compared to 58.1 percent by the home team.
Second Half Highlights
  • The Penguins put in the first five of the second half, before Jasmine Gaines put up five for the Flames on her own. Both teams committed turnovers in the next minute, but Youngstown State was able to cash in, 60-16.
  • Thompson got another triple to stop a 6-0 streak for the Penguins, but the Flames were staring down a fifty-point hole after the third, 71-21.
  • UIC contained the Penguins to just 10 points in the fourth, but the damage had been done, as it fell 81-29.
Facts & Figures
  • Jada Nneji led UIC with eight points and eight rebounds. Nneji also ended the night with three blocks, her seventh multi-block showing of the season.
  • Kiarra Thompson followed with six points and four rebounds, while also handing out a pair of assists.
  • Brittany Byrd was held scoreless, but contributed seven rebounds on offense.
  • Jasmine Gaines rebounded a career-high six, while also putting up five points and stealing the ball twice.
  • Youngstown State had four players in double figures, two with 20 or more. The Penguins also had two players with double-digit rebounding performances, as they outrebounded the Flames 46-31.
  • The Penguins made 49.2 percent of their shots, the highest by a Horizon League opponent since Milwaukee made an identical 49.2 percent against the Flames back on Jan. 15, 2018.
