Jones Nets First Career Double-Double in Loss to Raiders

Jones tallies career highs in points and rebounds as Flames fall 72-47

DAYTON, Ohio – Kienya Jones led all scorers with a career-high 21 points and also pulled down a personal-best 11 rebounds for the first double-double of her career, but the Flames (3-18, 1-9 HL) were topped 72-47 by first-place Wright State (17-5, 9-1 HL) on Thursday night.

First Half Highlights
  • The Raiders scored after winning the jump ball, but Brittany Byrd answered for the Flames on their first possession, making one from downtown, 3-2. Wright State scored four before Catera Etheridge made a short jumper for UIC to put them back within one, 6-5.
  • Jasmine Gaines drove one in, but the Raiders took nine unanswered before Kiarra Thompson broke the spell with a three, 20-10.
  • The second quarter started with both teams coming up with big blocks. After the Flames maintained possession, the Raiders' defense swatted the ball away from UIC and were able to turn it into two points, 24-11.  
  • Tylah Lampley and Kienya Jones both had 2-of-2 showings at the free throw line, but the Raiders followed it up with a trio of three-pointers, 34-15. Jones and Byrd strung together four points for UIC, but the Raiders finished out the half with four-straight of their own, 38-19.
Second Half Highlights
  • The two teams traded off buckets to start the second half, with UIC scoring 10 in the first five minutes to Wright State's nine. The Raiders put up a pair of layups to break up the back-and-forth, 53-32. Byrd put one in from the free-throw line, but Wright State laid up another pair, 57-33.
  • Neither team made a field goal in the first three and-a-half minutes of the fourth quarter, until Abreanna Lake cashed in on a short-range jumper, 58-35.
  • Jones kept finding the basket for UIC, scoring nine of UIC's 14 points in the final 10 minutes, but the Flames finished with a 72-47 loss.

  • Kienya Jones's 21 points came from 8-of-14 shooting, including a perfect 5-of-5 showing from the free-throw line.
  • Brittany Byrd tallied eight points and six rebounds, while also stealing a pair and handing out an assist.
  • Jasmine Gaines brought in five points for the offense.
  • Catera Etheridge netted four points and five rebounds for the Flames.
  • UIC shot 30.4 percent overall (17-of-56), while Wright State shot 40.5 percent (30-of-74). The Flames made just 15.4 percent (2-of-13) of their shots beyond the arc, compared to 25 percent (6-of-24) for the home team.
  • The Flames were outrebounded 51-37.
  • Wright State was better in the paint, 42-22, and made 23 points from UIC's 17 turnovers. The Flames scored five off the Raiders' 10 miscues.
  • Wright State scored 19 second chance points, compared to seven for the Flames. The Raiders' bench outscored UIC's 25-6.
