CHICAGO -- UIC will look to bounce back into the win column as it continues a three-game homestand on Thursday, Jan. 10, when the Youngstown State Penguins march into Credit Union 1 Arena for an important Horizon League tilt.
After claiming the first conference game of the year in thrilling fashion at Wright State, UIC (7-9, 1-2 Horizon League) is seeking to end a brief two-game skid on Thursday night. The Flames got off to a slow start last Friday against IUPUI as they did not score a basket for the first 6:15 of the contest while IUPUI raced out to a 10-0 lead. UIC came out hot to start the second half and built a slim four-point lead, but the Flames didn't get the breaks they needed to knock off the Jaguars, falling 66-64.
Godwin Boahen paced UIC with 18 points as he matched a career high with six 3-pointers for the second time this season.
Tarkus Ferguson had a well-rounded effort with 15 points, seven rebounds, seven assists, two steals and two blocks.
Rob Howard, who made his first career start for the Flames, tallied four of UIC's season-high 10 blocks in the game.
Youngstown State (5-12, 1-3 Horizon League) enters the weekend coming off its first conference win of the season, a 25-point triumph at Milwaukee on Jan. 5. It was the largest margin of victory in a true road game in the program's Division I era. Like the Flames, the Penguins will not hesitate to shoot from long range at any time. YSU ranks fourth nationally with 492 3-point field goal attempts, while shooting 33.5 percent from beyond the arc. Head coach
Jerrod Calhoun's squad is also a prolific rebounding team, ranking fourth with 688 total caroms. Youngstown State ranks ninth in the country with 14.53 offensive rebounds per game and
Naz Bohannon is seventh individually with 3.93.
UIC has won four consecutive games in the series. That is the longest winning streak for either side since the Flames won the first 16 meetings between Feb. 1, 1993 and Dec. 2, 2006.
Tickets remain on sale for the Horizon League matchup and can be purchased through
