Main, Flames Defeat Penguins

Brace by Emma Main is More Than Enough in 3-0 Win

UIC tied a season high with three goals in a 3-0 win at Youngstown State Saturday afternoon.  It was the eighth win of the campaign, setting a new program high.  It was also the Horizon League-leading ninth shutout, and second in a row.

"We were dangerous today," Tom Anagnost said.  "We created a lot of good goal-scoring opportunities and put a decent amount on frame.  I thought defensively we could have played better and prevented some of their chances.  We would have liked to score more but winning away and scoring three goals while not allowing any is always extremely positive.

"Lastly, we all got ice cream for two road wins in a row so all is right in the world with our team right now."

Emma Main registered a brace, providing more than enough offense for the win.  The Flames outshot their hosts, 20-4, and had an 11-2 edge in tries on goal.  They moved to 4-2 in conference play and are tied for third place in the Horizon League table.

Moments That Mattered
  • Main was the recipient of beautiful passing in the buildup to her first goal.  Lena Kurz sent a goal kick past the center line, where Emily Valentine headed it forward to Main.  Main kept her run strong, and when the keeper ventured out to meet her, she deftly sent the ball past and into the net.
  • The Flames applied pressure and held possession for most of the first half.  Youngstown State was afforded just one shot, while the Flames rattled Kate McEachern's cage with attempts by Tamae Douglas, Valentine, and later, Megan Bowman and Sydney Gratz.
  • The second half started much the way the first half ended.  Emily Kavanaugh forced a save in the first 90 seconds.  Main threatened twice, including a header that eluded McEachern but not the Penguins' back line.  Bowman drew iron at the hour mark.
  • In contrast to her first goal, Main's second was the result of an incredible individual effort.  She dribbled up the left flank and found space to move toward the corner of the box.  Before she reached the area, she wound up and delivered a rocket across the goal face and inside the far post.
  • Even ahead by two, UIC was able to play forward.  They accumulated corner kicks in bunches and continued to take shots, ultimately finishing with 20 tries.
  • Main was the instigator on UIC's final goal.  She picked off a slow pass in the Flames' final third, led Emily Valentine right into the box, and Valentine finished with authority.
Facts and Figures
  • Main had a game- and season-high six shots.  All of them went on target.
  • Main's brace was the third by a Flame this year.  She has a team high five goals.
  • Kurz made two saves and recorded her eighth clean sheet.  She also picked up her first assist on Main's first goal.
  • Valentine scored for the second straight game and tallied her third assist.  She moved into second place on the squad with seven points.
  • UIC allowed only four shots, with two on goal.  The Penguins' total was one more than a Flames' opponent season low, while UIC's haul was one shy of their season high.
  • The Flames did set a season high with 10 corner kicks.
  • Ten players had at least one shot.  Five had a look on target.
Up Next
  • The Flames have one more stop on their road trip.
  • A midweek test at Green Bay is on tap for Wednesday.
  • Following that match, the Flames will close the season with two home matches.
