CHICAGO – The UIC volleyball team (16-6, 5-3 HL) finished out the first half of Horizon League play on a high note, defeating IUPUI (6-15, 2-6 HL) by a score of 3-1 (18-25, 25-17, 25-16, 25-18) Saturday afternoon inside the Flames Athletic Center. The Flames bounced back after dropping the first set, soundly defeating the Jags in the next three sets to take home their fourth-straight win.
Match Highlights
Set One
- The Jags sped off to a 19-7 lead to start the first frame.
- UIC took five unanswered points by way of three kills, a block and a service error, 19-12.
- IUPUI took three of the next four to help restore its lead, 22-13, but the Flames grabbed five of the next six to come within five, 23-18.
- A kill for the Jags and a UIC error led the Jags to victory, 25-18.
Set Two
- The Flames quickly recovered, jumping out to an 18-10 advantage.
- The Jags came within five after three-straight, 18-13, but that would be as close as they could get.
- Terminations from Tatyana Ndekwe and Paola Santiago, as well as an IUPUI ball handling error ended the set in favor of the Flames, 25-17.
Set Three
- An early 8-0 run allowed the Flames to double up on the Jags, 12-6.
- UIC never trailed from that point, eventually leading by 10, 24-14.
- The Jags chipped in two more off a successful attack and a UIC error, but an IUPUI serve went long to end the set with another win for UIC, 25-16.
Set Four
- The Flames got another early lead, 15-10, but a trio of errors by UIC allowed the Jags to come within a pair, 15-13.
- The Flames used a timeout, and returned to the court taking the next three tallies, thanks to an Alexandria Hicks kill and a pair of IUPUI miscues, 18-13.
- The Jags put down a kill, but UIC took the next three off terminations from Brookah Palmer and Paola Santiago, as well as a block from Palmer and Michelle Glover, 21-14.
- IUPUI got a couple of late points from its offense, but its final attack was out of bounds, handing the Flames a 25-18 win in set four.
Facts & Figures
- Alexandria Hicks and Paola Santiago led UIC's offensive efforts with 12 kills apiece. Santiago added 10 digs, marking her third double-double of the season.
- Michelle Glover also finished with a double-digit kill effort, tallying 11 terminations. The sophomore also added three blocks on defense.
- Tatyana Ndekwe brought in seven kills for the offense and led the squad with four blocks.
- Velina Minkova paced the defense with 20 digs, while Manuela Conte ended the day with 13 digs.
- Marija Borcic dished out 26 assists for the offense, while Lauren Musante added 19 assists.
- The Flames ended the match hitting .270 overall (55k-18e-137a) compared to .200 (42k-16e-130a) for the Jaguars.
- UIC tallied more digs (62-57) than IUPUI, as well as blocks (7.0-4.0).
