UIC lost for the first time in Horizon League play Wednesday night at IUPUI. Autumn Weeks scored both of IUPUI's goals in the Jaguars' 2-1 win, which brought the teams even in the conference table with identical 2-1 records.
Jessica Christmas got the Flames on the board when she chested
Emily Valentine's corner kick inside the near post. It deflected off the keeper and a Jaguar defender before settling in the net. But her first career goal, an 88
th-minute tally, came too late for UIC to hunt down an equalizer.
That it took two substitutes to manufacture the lone goal may be a source of
Tom Anagnost's displeasure with his team. "I am thoroughly disappointed in our team," the head coach said. "Urgency, intensity, passion, and heart were displayed more by the opponent than us and they deserved to win the game."
The Flames fell to 6-4-1 overall and had their three match winning streak snapped.
Moments That Mattered
- Emma Main provided UIC with early moments of offense. Off a free kick that Lena Kurz sent into the box, Main got off a shot but seemed to just not quite strike the ball flush, and it went wide. Her next try required her to loft it over a defender. She arced it high enough for the keeper to see clearly and make the grab as it descended.
- IUPUI foreshadowed the pressure they would apply to the Flames' goal. Their very first shot forced Kurz to make a powerful leap for the save. It was one of five shots the hosts would put on goal in the first half.
- The Jaguars scored in the 15th minute from the run of play. Autumn Weeks was unmarked in the box and made a free run to the spot where Maya Lacognato's cross from deep in the corner landed. Weeks had a clean shot to the left 90 and she made it count.
- UIC took a free kick at the edge of the 18 after a foul on IUPUI's keeper for handling the ball outside the box. After the ball was tapped into play, Grace Haines lined up a shot that came close to becoming an equalizer before Sophia Lipka punched it over the crossbar.
- Kurz dove again on a shot from the edge of the 18. Her second spectacular save of the first half gave way to two IUPUI corner kicks, both of which were defended well.
- Tamae Douglas impacted the match on both ends of the pitch in the second half. Early in the period, she headed out a cross and later deftly dispossessed a free runner. Later, when the Flames were chasing two goals, she played forward. She nearly scored when she headed a pass just over the crossbar. In another sequence, she charged into the box hunting a shot, only to be met by Lipka, who was on a charge of her own to grab the ball.
- Weeks again received a pass in space lined up a shots from 20 yards out, sending an absolute rocket to the upper right corner. Kurz leapt for it and may have gotten a fingertip on it, but the shot was so well struck that she had little chance to affect it.
- Lipka was out of position when she came out to punch away a corner kick but missed. With an open net looming, two Flames could not get to the bounding ball before a Jaguar defender cleared.
- Valentine served in the late corner kick that was so well-placed, it may have gone into the goal without Christmas' help. But the latter left no doubt, helping UIC avoid the shutout.
