CHICAGO -- UIC hits the road for the first time this season on Friday, Nov. 8, as the Flames travel to take on No. 14/15 Memphis. Friday's contest is slated for a 6 p.m. start and will be broadcast nationally on ESPNU. Ted Emrich and Robbie Hummel will have the call. The Flames moved to 1-0 on the season following a 75-72 victory over Olivet Nazarene.
Godwin Boahen led all UIC players with 21 points and was joined in double figures by
Michael Diggins (11),
Jacob Wiley (11) and
Jamie Ahale (10).
• UIC was picked to finish third in the Horizon League preseason poll and received one first-place vote. The Flames were represented on the Preseason All-Horizon League Team by
Tarkus Ferguson (First Team) and
Marcus Ottey (Second Team).
SERIES STUFF
• Friday will be the first-ever meeting between UIC and Memphis.
• This will be UIC's 18th all-time meeting against a current member of the AAC. The Flames have picked up a pair of wins against UCF and one against Cincinnati.
• Memphis enters the contest ranked 14th in the preseason AP poll and 15th in the coaches poll.
• The Tigers are 1-0 on the year following a 97-64 victory over South Carolina State on Tuesday evening. Freshman James Wiseman led all scorers with 28 points and 11 rebounds.
• Fellow freshman Precious Achiuwa was the other Tiger in double figures, adding 14 points and eight rebounds.
BOAHEN'S BIG NIGHT
• Senior
Godwin Boahen lifted the Flames to a season opening victory over Olivet Nazarene on Nov. 5.
• The senior finished with a team-high 21 points, including the go-ahead bucket in the closing seconds.
• Boahen was fouled while converting a layup with 2.6 seconds remaining. The guard finished off the 3-point play with the ensuing free throw to secure the 75-72 victory.
• After being limited to just two points in the first half on 1-of-6 shooting, Boahen exploded for 19 points behind 6-of-11 shooting in the final 20 minutes.
DIFFERENT YEAR, (VIRTUALLY) SAME TEAM
• The UIC team that takes to the court in 2019-20 will be largely comprised of the same faces from a year ago.
• Of the 13 players on last year's team, 10 return this season, including 9-of-11 letterwinners and its top nine statistical leaders from a year ago.
• UIC leads all Division I programs in terms of the percentage of returning scoring (99.6%) and minutes played (99.2%) from last season.
