DAYTON, Ohio – The UIC volleyball team (19-8, 8-5 HL) dropped a 3-1 (25-23, 21-25, 18-25, 16-25) decision on Friday night to second-place Wright State (22-4, 11-3 HL). The Flames held off a late comeback from Wright State in the first to take a one-set lead, but the Raider offense geared up to take the next three, finishing with a 53-39 advantage in kills.
Match Highlights
Set One
- A 7-0 run gave way to an early 11-3 lead for the Flames. A pair of blocks as well as kills from Brookah Palmer and Alexandria Hicks were featured in the streak.
- The Flames pushed the lead to nine, 18-9, but three-straight kills for the Raiders put the Raiders six away, 18-12, forcing head coach Justin Ingram to call timeout.
- Wright State took another three out of the timeout to pull within three, 18-15.
- A kill from Hicks ended the streak and a block from Brookah Palmer and Michelle Glover followed, 20-15.
- The Raiders took the next four, putting them one away, 20-19, but a service error and an attack error for Wright State pushed UIC's lead to three, 22-19.
- The home team tied it at 22 and again at 23, but another Raider attack error and a block from Kiera James and Tatyana Ndekwe pushed the Flames over the edge, 25-23.
Set Two
- The Flames took another lead to start set two, 15-10.
- The Raiders once again built a comeback, using a 5-0 run to take over the lead, 18-17.
- Glover tied it at 18, but a kill and a bad set by the Flames put Wright State up by a pair, 20-18.
- Back-to-back terminations from Hicks allowed UIC to match the Raiders at 20, but a net violation by the Flames gave Wright State a one-point advantage, 21-20.
- A Raider attack error made the set even at 21, but Wright State took the next four unanswered to take the set, 25-21.
Set Three
- Four-straight successful attacks gave the Raiders a 13-8 lead in set three.
- The Flames were only able to get one off a Wright State attack error before the Raiders rattled off another three unanswered, 16-9.
- UIC scored a pair by way of a kill from Hicks and a Wright State ball handling error, but the Raiders took another three, 19-11.
- The Flames made a late surge with two kills and a block, 21-16.
- The gap proved too large for UIC to overcome, dropping set three, 25-18.
Set Four
- Wright State continued its dominance in set four, pulling out to a 18-9 lead.
- The Raiders led by 12 at match point, 24-12, but the Flames took four straight to cut at the lead, 24-16.
- Wright State ended UIC's streak with a kill to end the set, 25-16.
Facts & Figures
- Alexandria Hicks was the only Flame to reach double figures in kills with 10. Hicks also contributed four blocks for the defense.
- Michelle Glover finished with nine kills and nearly as many blocks, making seven stops.
- Paola Santiago put in a well-rounded effort with seven kills and 10 digs.
- Velina Minkova led the defense with 25 digs. Palmer matched Santiago's total, digging out 10.
- Tatyana Ndekwe made six blocks for the defense.
- Marija Borcic handed out 24 assists to lead the Flames, while Musante assisted on 11.
- The top two blocking teams in the League were on display, putting up a combined 24 blocks. The Flames held the advantage, 13-11.
- Wright State put up 81 digs to UIC's 73.
