Late Surge Not Enough in Youngstown

28-point fourth quarter not enough as the Flames fall 77-65

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – A late surge for UIC, powered by 16 points in a seven-minute span from Tylah Lampley, proved not enough on Monday evening as the Flames (1-12, 0-2 HL) fell 77-65 to Horizon League foe Youngstown State (9-4, 2-0 HL). The Flames tallied 28 points in the fourth quarter to tie their season best as a squad, but consecutive 20+ quarters in the second half for the Penguins proved to be UIC's demise.

The Flames outshot the Penguins overall, 42.6 percent (26-of-61) to 34.8 percent (23-of-66). They were also stronger from downtown, sinking 29.4 percent (5-of-17) of their long shots compared to 20.5 percent (8-of-39) for Youngstown State.

First Half Highlights
  • Youngstown State drew first blood with a pair of threes, but the Flames came back within one after a jumper from Tylah Lampley and a triple from Kimeira Burks, 6-5. The Penguins rattled off another three, which Tiana Jackson answered with an under-and-around layup to keep the Flames within one possession, 9-7.
  • Burks tied the game at nine, and a jumper from Jada Nneji gave UIC its first lead, 11-9. A block from Abreanna Lake led to a Flames defensive board, which Burks cashed in for two on the other end to extend the lead, 13-9.
  • The Penguins erased the deficit and regained the lead with a three-point conversion and a layup, 14-13. A pair of free throws and another layup for Youngstown State gave it an 18-13 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
  • The home team added four to its lead at the start of the second quarter, 22-13, but the Flames gained them back with a layup from Nneji and a pair of free throws from Jackson, 22-17. Nneji continued to serve as UIC's offensive source, putting in another layup as well as a free throw, 27-20.
  • Tough defense for the Flames forced three Penguin turnovers and gave UIC six unanswered points, four of which came from Nneji, 27-26. Youngstown State took five-of-the-six back in the final minutes of the first half off a jumper and a buzzer-beater three, 31-26.
Second Half Highlights
  • The Penguins expanded on their lead with an 8-2 run to start the second half, 39-28. Shelby Case swished in a three, 39-31, but Youngstown State scored again on its next possession, 41-31. The Penguins furthered their lead by taking the next 10, 51-31.
  • Tylah Lampley ended the streak with a pair of buckets, 53-35. Another buzzer-beater score for Youngstown State would end the third quarter, 55-37.
  • Abreanna Lake laid one up before the two teams traded trips to the line, 57-41. Lampley and Nneji gave the Flames eight of the next 10 to put them back within 10, 59-49.
  • The Penguins put away a trio of free throws, but back-to-back threes from Lampley and a jumper from Jackson put the Flames just five away with three minutes to go, 62-57.
  • Youngstown State retaliated with a three and a pair of layups, putting its lead back into double figures, 69-59. The Flames were unable to bridge the gap, falling 77-65.
