CONWAY, S.C. – The UIC softball team (2-3) wrapped up its first tournament of the season on Sunday with a 9-1 (5) loss to host Coastal Carolina (4-1). The Chanticleers posted six runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the game in run-rule fashion.
UIC ends the Kickin' Chicken Classic with a 2-3 record, after taking home wins over Boston University and Rider, as well as a pair of losses to No. 8 Tennessee in the first two days of the tournament.
Skylee James,
Lexi Watts, and
Cassie Kaelber all ended the tournament with seven hits across UIC's five games.
Alyssa Griman tabbed six hits, two of which were homers, while freshman
Tara McElligott registered five hits in her first taste of collegiate action.
Game Highlights
- James knocked her first home run of the season over the left-center wall in the top of the third to put UIC on the board first.
- Coastal Carolina answered in their half of the inning with a two-out rally to take over the lead, 3-1. A hit by pitch scored after back-to-back singles, and the triple that followed scored another two to switch the lead in favor of the home team.
- Two walks and a bunt loaded the bases for the Chanticleers at the start of the bottom of the fifth, and two batters crossed the plate after a UIC fielding error, 5-1. A single scored another pair, and a homer to left center sent another pair of runners across the plate, sealing the 9-1 run-rule victory for the hosts.

- Coastal Carolina held the edge in hits, 8-6. James gets credit for UIC's lone run with her solo shot in the top of the third, her only hit on the day. Cassie Kaelber, Lexi Watts, Kayla Wedl, Alyssa Griman and Kayla Pociejewski all contributed one hit apiece.
- Marley Hanlon got the start and pitched 2.2 innings, giving up three runs off five hits to take the loss. Allie Trudeau finished the remaining 1.1 innings, allowing six runs off three hits while walking four.
