Sharp-Shooting Penguins Top Flames at Home

Three Flames score in double figures, but Flames fall 83-59

CHICAGO – Three Flames scored in double digits, but UIC (3-21, 1-12 HL) was unable to contain the League's top-shooting team in Youngstown State (18-6, 10-3) on Sunday at the Credit Union 1 Arena. The Penguins made 49.2 percent of their shots and 32.4 percent from beyond the arc to defeat the Flames 83-59.

First Half Highlights
  • Both teams entered out of the gate with three pointers, but the Penguins offense surged, scoring 14 of the next 16 points for an early 17-5 advantage. Brittany Byrd put down a three to put the lead back down to single digits, 19-10, but the Penguins replied with two triples of their own, 25-12.
  • Tylah Lampley became the third Flame to make a three with just over a minute remaining in the first quarter, 25-15, but the Penguins finished out the first quarter with one more trey, 29-17.
  • The two teams combined for nine threes in the first quarter alone, with the Penguins putting in six long balls compared to three for UIC.
  • Both teams went without a field goal in the first two minutes, until Youngstown State was able to string together two layups and a three, 38-18.
  • Catera Etheridge took care of UIC's offense in the second half of the second quarter, taking credit for seven of UIC's 10 points in the final five minutes of the half.
  • Youngstown State ended the first half shooting 50 percent, compared to 39.1 percent for UIC. The Penguins also sank 36.8 percent of their shots from downtown in the first half to take a 44-28 lead at the break.
Second Half Highlights
  • The Penguins experienced shooting woes in the middle minutes of the third quarter, going 0-for-4 in a two and-a-half minute span, but another three broke the spell. Brittany Byrd tripled, but YSU got back to its ways with back-to-back threes, 62-38.
  • Both teams tallied 18 points in the third quarter, leaving Youngstown's lead untouched, 62-46.
  • Lampley drove in a pair of layups within one minute of each other, but the Flames were unable to stop the driving Penguins, 72-50.
  • Lampley came through again with a high rim shot that went in for three and Kiarra Thompson put in a pair of free throws, 72-55.
  • The visitors took the next nine unanswered, 81-55. Byrd chipped in one more three in the final two minutes, but the final buzzer sounded with an 83-59 win for the visitors.
