CHICAGO -- UIC will head to northeast Ohio for the second leg of its three-game road trip beginning with a matchup against Cleveland State at the Wolstein Center on Thursday, Feb. 14 at 7 p.m ET/6 p.m. CT.
The Flames (13-12, 7-5 Horizon League) opened the road trip on Saturday, Feb. 9, when they snatched a thrilling one-point victory at IUPUI. UIC led the Jaguars by as many as 18 points, but the home team made a furious comeback to take the lead in the final minute of the game. With about 30 seconds to go,
Tarkus Ferguson stole the ball from IUPUI's leading scorer Camron Justice and it eventually ended up in the hands of
Marcus Ottey. Ottey glided in for a layup that put UIC ahead 76-75 with 26.3 seconds to go and that's exactly how the game would end. IUPUI missed three shots in the waning seconds, one blocked by Ferguson, to send the Flames away with their second road win in Horizon League play.
Five UIC players scored in double figures on Saturday for only the second time this season. Ottey led the bunch with 13 points, while Ferguson and
Michael Diggins each added 12.
Jamie Ahale and
Rob Howard each netted 11 points, with all of Howard's scoring coming in a first half that saw UIC erput for 50 points.
Cleveland State (7-19, 2-11 Horizon League) is also coming off an exciting victory. The Vikings picked up their second conference win of the season with a 78-68 triumph against Milwaukee.
Tyree Appleby was sensational in that game as he registered the first triple-double in program history with 19 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists. It was the third triple-double turned in by an Horizon League player (UIC's Ferguson and NKU's
Drew McDonald).
In the first meeting between the two teams this season, UIC tied a program record by making 17 3-pointers for the third time, and the first time since 1996. In a 73-56 Flames triumph, Ferguson buried six 3-pointers against the Vikings and Ahale sank a career-high four.
