Turnovers Plague Flames in Loss to Detroit Mercy

Titans prevail 62-45 over UIC

DETROIT – The UIC women's basketball team (3-22, 1-13 HL) was handed a 62-45 loss by Detroit Mercy (4-20, 2-11 HL) on Thursday evening inside Calihan Hall. The Flames committed 28 turnovers, their most in Horizon League play, resulting in 21 points for the Titans.

First Half Highlights
  • Detroit Mercy got the first score a minute and-a-half in with a pair of free throws, and the Flames did same one minute later to tie the game at two. The Titans took back-to-back buckets, followed by the Flames first field goal, a short jumper from Jada Nneji, 6-4.
  • Tylah Lampley sank a ten footer, 8-6, and it was Lampley again in the final seconds of the first, converting a three-point play to put the Flames within one after the first 10 minutes, 12-11.
  • Abreanna Lake put the Flames ahead in the first 20 seconds of the second, 13-12, but the Titans took it back with a driving layup, 14-13. The lead changed hands two more times until Detroit Mercy rattled off seven in-a-row, 21-15.
  • Kiarra Thompson laid one up for the Flames but the home team replied with its second-straight three, 24-17. Detroit Mercy ended the first half on a 6-3 run to take a 10-point lead to the locker room, 30-20.  
Second Half Highlights
  • Nneji registered a pair of makes for UIC at the start of the third quarter, but the Titans scored nine unanswered over the next two minutes to grow their lead, 41-26.
  • Nneji and Jasmine Gaines combined for a 6-3 series for UIC, 44-30, but Detroit Mercy answered with six points to the Flames' two, 50-32. The Titans lead reached 18 by the end of the third period, 52-34.
  • The home team took the first seven of the fourth quarter with a pair of triples and a free throw, until Lake swatted the ball away at half court and ran it back for two to end the streak, 59-36. Another Titan turnover turned into two points for Kienya Jones, 59-36.
  • Jones tacked on six points for the Flames in the final four and-a-half minutes, but Detroit Mercy would end the night with a 62-45 victory.
Facts & Figures
  • Jada Nneji returned to the lineup for the Flames and was in double-double territory, leading the way with 13 points and eight rebounds. Nneji also tallied three blocks on the night.
  • Kienya Jones was also near double-double with 10 points and eight rebounds.
  • Tylah Lampley scored in double figures for the second-straight game, contributing 10 points and seven rebounds.
  • UIC outshot Detroit Mercy, 39.6 percent to 36.7 percent, but the Titans had more opportunities, sinking 22 of their 60 shots compared to 19-of-48 for UIC.
  • The Flames were also stronger in the paint, 34-20.
  • UIC's bench outscored Detroit Mercy by a staggering 27-2, due in large part to Nneji and Lampley's efforts.
  • The Titans had 17 points off the fast break, compared to 11 for UIC. The Flames put in seven on the second chance, while Detroit Mercy tallied four on the second try.
  • Out of UIC's 28 turnovers, 15 were Titan steals. The Flames made just five steals off Detroit Mercy.
  • The Titans handed out 17 assists as a squad, while the Flames recorded eight.
