Women’s Tennis Preps for Pair of In-state Rivals

Flames battle Bradley on Friday; SIUE on Saturday

CHICAGO – The UIC women's tennis team (4-4) will look to extend its two-match win streak this weekend with a pair of matches against in-state rivals Bradley and SIUE. The Flames will head south to Peoria, Ill. where they will face the Braves on Friday, Feb. 15 at 5 p.m. CT before taking on the Cougars the following day at 12 p.m. Both matches will be played at Clubs at River City.

UIC wrapped up its busiest weekend of the dual season with a 2-1 showing, defeating Valparaiso (6-1) on Saturday and Chicago State (5-2) on Sunday after a 5-2 loss to Pac-12 member Oregon on Friday. The Flames posted back-to-back wins in doubles after dropping the first match against both Oregon and Chicago State to rally and take the doubles point in both instances.

Senior Rachel Le Comber went 2-0 on the weekend in singles, and was awarded Horizon League Player of the Week, posting UIC's only singles win over the Ducks at No. 6 on Friday and taking another win at No. 5 on Sunday against the Cougars. Le Comber's win on Sunday was her 68th-career win with the Flames, putting her at No. 10 on UIC's all-time career singles win list.

Le Comber joined Nell Arendt at No. 3 doubles against Oregon for a 6-4 win and the pair was back at it on Sunday at with another win at No. 3, 6-2. Both matches allowed the Flames to even the score in doubles, 1-1, and the duo was awarded Horizon League Doubles Team of the Week for their efforts. 

Bradley is off to a hot start at 5-1, with its sole loss coming against UMKC in its second match of the dual season. The Braves have won their last four straight, taking wins over Northern Illinois (5-2) and North Dakota (4-3) last weekend. Malini Wijesinghe is an undefeated 6-0 in the No. 3 singles spot, and she joins Bozana Lojpur in doubles at No. 2 with a 4-1 mark to lead the Braves.

SIUE is an even 3-3 on the season, most recently defeating fellow Horizon League member Green Bay on Sunday (Feb. 10), 7-0. Callaghan Adams, Nicole Gomez and Alina Munteanu each have identical 4-2 marks in singles, while Gomez and Munteanu are also 4-2 as a duo in doubles competition.

The Flames will return home to face Cardinal Stritch on Thursday, Feb. 28 at 10:30 a.m. inside XS Tennis.
