KENNESAW, Ga. – Kennesaw State scored in each of the first four innings Saturday as the Owls built a lead that UIC was unable to overcome and the downed the Flames, 9-2.
KSU (2-0) scored once in the first, second and third innings before hanging two on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth to take a 5-0 lead. Starting pitcher
Ryan Kennedy held UIC (0-2) hitless through 4.2 innings before a two-out rally produced a pair of runs in the top of the fifth.
Joshua Figueroa hit a two-run single for the Flames to cut the deficit to three, but the Flames would come no closer during the game.
How It Happened
- The home team struck first with a solo home run off the bat of Alex Carballo to lead off its half of the first inning.
- The Owls added single tallies in the second and third innings before pushing across a pair in the bottom of the fourth. KSU got another solo home run, this time from Terrence Norman, and another on a sacrifice bunt after a single, stolen base and wild pitch.
- The Flames, held hitless through four-plus innings, got on the board for the first time in the top of the fifth. Dominic Smith walked to start a two-out rally before Ryan Lin-Peistrup singled for UIC's first knock of the day. Danny Riley then walked to load the bases ahead of Joshua Figueroa. The Flames catcher took the first pitch he saw from Kennedy back up the middle to score Smith and Lin-Peistrup and cut UIC's deficit to three runs.
- The Owls got the two tallies back against the Flames bullpen in the bottom of the sixth. Jake Franklin was hit by a pitch to start the frame and he eventually scored on a single from Tyler Tolve. David Chabut drove in a run with a double down the line in left. Ryan O'Reilly came on in relief for UIC with two and nobody out. Carballo walked to load the bases, but O'Reilly got a ground ball back to the mound and threw home for a force out before ripping off two swinging strikeouts to finish the frame.
- Kennesaw State tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single and a run-scoring double play that helped the Flames limit the damage.
Notable

- The Flames turned their first three double plays of the season against the Owls. UIC starting pitcher Braeden Toikka got double-play ground balls to end the third and fifth innings, while Mengat got one in the bottom of the eighth.
- The Flames are batting only .156 in the early going of 2019 with 10 hits and only one extra-base knock, which came when Thomas Smart homered at Georgia Tech on Friday.
