UIC’s Winning Streak Snapped at Youngstown State

Flames surge ends at four games with 81-73 defeat at hands of Penguins

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio  – UIC's four-game winning streak was halted Saturday night as the Flames at Youngstown State, 81-73.

Godwin Boahen led UIC with 20 points, but UIC (14-13, 8-6 Horizon League) could not contain Darius Quisenberry of the Penguins (12-16, 8-7 Horizon League). The reigning Horizon League Freshman of the Week tallied a career-high 37 points to lead Youngstown State. It was the most points scored by a single player against the Flames this season.

First-Half Headlines
  • FLAMES START FAST: UIC won the tip and went right to work with Marcus Ottey burying a jumper just over 20 seconds into the contest. After Boahen blocked a shot on the defensive end, he made a quick 3-pointer off a feed from Tarkus Ferguson. Following a turnover by the Penguins, Boahen converted a layup that gave the Flames a 7-0 lead 1:18 into the game.
  • EXTENDED ADVANTAGE: The visiting team pushed the lead to 10 for the first time when Ferguson scored three points the hard way with 13:56 to go in the period. Later, Boahen split a pair of free throws to make it a 12-point lead with 11:47 left.
  • PENGUIN POWER: Youngstown State methodically shot its way back into the ballgame and had its deficit down to a point on three occasions in a span of 2:35, but each of those times the Flames had an answer. Boahen made two free throws, Ferguson drilled a long 3-pointer and Howard hammered down a two-handed dunk that gave UIC a 36-33 lead with 2:49 to go.
  • YSU GRABS LEAD: Quisenberry, gave YSU its first lead of the game on a steal and a layup with 1:58 to go. Two 3-pointers from Devin Morgan quickly pushed the lead up to seven, but Michael Diggins put back an offensive rebound to beat the horn and send UIC into the locker room with a five-point deficit, down 43-38.
Second-Half Headlines
  • COMEBACK LIDS: The Penguins scored the first point of the second half before the Flames countered with a 10-2 run to regain the lead. Marcus Ottey tied the game at 44 with a layup, but was assessed a technical foul that resulted in two free throws made by Quisenberry. Jordan Blount tied again with a jump-hook before Boahen put UIC ahead, 48-46, with 16:22 to go in the game.
  • KICK IT TO SIX: The Flames would extend the lead to six points on two occasions in the minutes that followed with Jacob Wiley and Howard each giving the visitors a six-point advantage. Howard's layup off a feed from Wiley put UIC up 56-50 with 10:33 to go.
  • TRADING RUNS: The scoreboard showed 60 points apiece when the Flames went on a five-point surge to take the lead. Blount knocked down a 3-pointer from the left corner before Ottey got knocked down making another layup with 5:55 to go. UIC would be held scoreless for the next 2:45, however, and an 11-0 run had YSU in front 71-65 after two Quisenberry free throws with 3:34 to go.
  • LAST LOOKS: The Flames twice had the deficit down to one possession down the stretch. A missed 3-pointer by Boahen with 52 seconds to go gave the ball back to YSU with a 76-73 lead. The Penguins made 5-of-8 free throws in the final minute to dictate the final margin.
Highlights

Notable
  • The Flames slipped to 1-10 when trailing at the half this season. UIC has not overcome a deficit after 20 minutes since its home opener on Nov. 15 against William & Mary. The Flames trailed by seven at the break and won that game by five in overtime.
  • UIC's five-game winning streak against Youngstown State also came to an end. It was the program's longest since winning the first 16 games of the series between 1993-2006.
  • Godwin Boahen scored at least 20 points for the sixth time this season. It is the second time against the Penguins and the third time in Horizon League play.
  • Tarkus Ferguson pulled down a game-high eight rebounds to go along with 14 points and three steals. The junior has stolen the ball nine times over his team's last three games.
  • Marcus Ottey scored 18 points Saturday after being held to only four in the first meeting against YSU on Jan. 10. He hit that number Saturday just over three minutes into the game (3:10).
  • UIC's six 3-pointers were the fewest since it made only two on 18 attempts against Oakland on Jan. 26. That was the last time the Flames lost before Saturday.
  • Youngstown State shot 67 percent from 3-point range in the first half, 8-of-12, but made only one of seven attempts in the second half.
