UIC Comes up Short in Day Two of Hillenbrand Invitational

Flames open day two with 7-5 loss to USF; falls 13-5 (6) in nightcap versus New Mexico

TUCSON, Ariz. – The UIC softball team (2-7) couldn't get the job done in day two of the Hillenbrand Invitational, dropping a 7-5 decision to South Florida (3-6) in the opener and ending the day with a 13-5 (6) loss to New Mexico (3-4). UIC kept pace with the Lobos through the first five and-a-half innings until a seven-run sixth inning for New Mexico ended the game early for The Flames.

UIC was unable to muster a comeback strong enough to erase a seven-run deficit in the day two opener, as the University of South Florida held on for a 7-5 win over the Flames Saturday morning. The Bulls put together seven runs in their first four at bats, leaving the Flames with work to do. UIC's bats woke up in the bottom of the fourth with four runs and it tacked on another in the fifth, but USF buckled down and contained the Flames in the final two innings to come away with the win.

  • USF quickly got on the board in the top of the first with a single and a double, 1-0.
  • The Bulls led off with another single in the second, and the runner made it home after a sacrifice bunt, ground out and an infield single, 2-0.
  • USF once again got the leadoff man aboard in the third, and the next batter followed with a triple, 3-0. A sacrifice fly scored the runner from third, extending the Bulls lead to four.
  • A double, a walk and a bunt loaded the bases for the Bulls in the fourth, and a pair of sacrifice flies scored back-to-back runs, 6-0. A two-out walk put runners on the corners, and a double steal plated another run, 7-0.
  • Skylee James and Kayla Wedl tabbed consecutive singles and Tara McElligott walked to load the bases for Alyssa Griman, who singled to score two, 7-2. Kayla Pociejewski laid down a sacrifice bunt to put two more in scoring position, and Schyler Ek followed with her first hit and first RBI as a Flame, 7-3. Ek stole second, and Lexi Watts singled to left to drive in Griman, 7-4.
  • Wedl doubled with one out in the bottom of the fifth and came around to score on another Griman single, 7-5.
