Explosive Third Quarter Lifts Oakland Over UIC

Flames finish final road trip with 74-57 loss at Oakland

ROCHESTER, Mich. – The UIC women's basketball team (3-23, 1-14 HL) finished out its regular season road slate on Saturday with a 74-57 loss to Oakland (6-19, 3-11 HL). The Golden Grizzlies offense erupted in the third quarter with 27 points after leading by just two at the half to take a commanding 15-point lead into the fourth quarter. The Golden Grizzlies made 60 percent of their shots in the third, while holding the Flames to just 28.6 percent.

First Half Highlights
  • The game's first 18 points were all made beyond the arc, resulting in a 9-9 tie three minutes in. Tylah Lampley made the first two-pointer of the game, but Oakland came back with its fourth-straight triple, 12-11.
  • Lampley came through again to tie the game for the Flames at 16, and Brittany Byrd's first score of the day put the Flames ahead, 18-16.
  • The Flames finished the first 10 minutes with its highest first-quarter point total, leading the Golden Grizzlies 19-18 after the first period.
  • The first points of the second quarter didn't come until three minutes in, as Oakland took back the lead with a driving layup. Lampley evened the score out again with a free throw, but Oakland replied with another three in its next possession, 23-20.
  • UIC fought back with a 6-0 run to put the lead back in its favor, 26-24. Kienya Jones had back-to-back layups in the run, while Lampley took credit for the remaining bucket.
  • Tied at 28, the Golden Grizzlies put in a pair of free throws and turned a layup into a three-point play to lead by five, 33-28. Lampley and Kiarra Thompson put in three from the charity stripe to gain some ground back for the Flames, but they still trailed by a bucket at the half, 33-31.
Second Half Highlights
  • Oakland grew its lead to six with back-to-back scores to open the second half, but UIC brought the lead back down to one possession with a trio of free throws from Brittany Byrd, 37-34.
  • UIC was unable to stop a barrage from Oakland's top player Taylor Jones, who put in three field goals and a pair of freebies for the Golden Grizzlies in a three minute span to give Oakland its largest lead of the game, 48-38.
  • The home team kept making their shots, ending the third quarter making their last six attempts for a 60-45 lead.
  • Byrd took responsibility for UIC's scoring in the fourth quarter, scoring 10 of the Flames 12 points. The Flames kept on par with Oakland in the last ten minutes, 14-12, but were unable to erase the damage from the previous quarter.
Facts & Figures
  • Brittany Byrd was near a double-double with 19 points and nine rebounds, both of which were team highs. Byrd also made four of UIC's 11 steals to match her season high.
  • Tylah Lampley was in double digits for the third-straight game, bringing in 13 points while also adding five rebounds and two assists.
  • Kiarra Thompson and Kienya Jones were near double digits, tallying nine and eight points, respectively. Both players ended the day with four rebounds.
  • The Golden Grizzlies out rebounded UIC 50-37.
  • The Fames made 11 steals on the Golden Grizzlies, while coughing up the ball just five times to Oakland.
  • UIC committed a season-low seven turnovers in the game while forcing 15 Oakland miscues. The Flames took seven points from those turnovers, while the Golden Grizzlies capitalized with 10 points off UIC's turnovers.
  • Oakland held a sizeable advantage in the paint, 42-24. They were also better on the second chance, 14-7. The Golden Grizzlies bench also had a slight edge, 19-17.
  • Oakland outshot UIC, making 44.6 percent of its shots on the day compared to 30.3 percent for the Flames.
