ROCHESTER, Mich. – Oakland surged ahead of UIC in the Horizon League standings by knocking off the Flames Thursday night, 86-72.
UIC (15-15, 9-8 Horizon League) was hampered by 20 turnovers, while Oakland (14-16, 10-7 Horizon League) went to the free throw line 38 times. The Golden Grizzlies converted 30 of those shots from the charity stripe, while the Flames were granted only 15 free throws, making 11.
Godwin Boahen tied for game-high honors with 20 points for UIC. It was his eighth performance of at least 20 points this season and the third time in his team's last four games.
Jacob Wiley provided a big lift off the bench for the Flames by turning in his first career double-double. The sophomore posted a career-high 10 rebounds to go along with 10 points.
First-Half Headlines
- EARLY RUNS: Oakland scored the game's first seven points as the Flames turned the ball over one each of their first two possessions. UIC settled soon and Michael Diggins put his team on the board with a 3-pointer from the right slight. The next time down the Flames corralled an offensive rebound and eventually Marcus Ottey knifed in for a layup to make it 7-5.
- PULLING EVEN: Tarkus Ferguson dropped home a 3-pointer that tied the score at 26 with 8:03 to go in the first half. It was part of a 14-7 run that included a pair of triples from the junior guard.
- FIRING IN FRONT: Oakland led by four with under four minutes to play when Godwin Boahen was fouled on a 3-point attempt. He would make all three free throws and after Oakland missed the front end of a 1-and-1, the Flames got the rebound. Diggins drove the lane and found Jacob Wiley who converted a two-handed flush that put UIC in front for the first time, 33-32, with 3:23 to go in the half.
- LATE MISTAKES: Three UIC turnovers in the final 1:57 of the half helped Oakland get back in front, 39-36 at the half.
Second-Half Headlines
- FOUL FEST: The beginning of the second half featured as many points scored as fouls called (four) over the first 4:06 of the period. At that point the Flames had only shaved one point off the halftime deficit.
- GOLDEN GRIZZLIES GAIN CONTROL: The game was tied at 44 when Wiley scored down low off a feed from Boahen. Oakland drew a foul at the other end and made two free throws to begin a 14-5 run that pushed the lead to nine and prompted the Flames to use a timeout with 10:27 to go in the game.
- FINAL FIGHT: The Golden Grizzlies extended the lead to 18 points with 6:05 to go, but UIC would not be doused easily. A 9-2 run cut the deficit to 11 points with 2:37 to go following a steal from Diggins and a layup from Boahen. The Flames would be unable to come any closer, however, before falling 86-72.

- Jacob Wiley became the third different UIC player to record a double-double this season with 10 points and 10 rebounds. His 10 boards mark a career high and led all players in the game.
- Godwin Boahen has scored at least 20 points for the Flames in three of the team's last four games. He also added seven assists to match a season high and four steals to match a career high on Thursday. He scored 12 points on 5-of-6 from the floor with five assists in the second half alone.
- Tarkus Ferguson played at least 40 minutes for the
- Oakland's 38 free throw attempts were the most by an opponent in Horizon League play this season. Notre Dame also shot 38 free throws on Nov. 6 and Saint Joseph's went to the line 41 times on Nov. 28.
- UIC committed 20 turnovers Thursday, its highest total in 17 Horizon League games this season. Oakland converted the mistakes into 16 points, while the Flames scored 11 points off 12 OU errors.
- UIC made nine 3-pointers Thursday. In the first meeting against Oakland on January 26, the Flames were limited to two triples on 18 attempts that night.
- Green Bay also defeated first-place Wright State on Thursday to end UIC's chance at hosting a quarterfinal in the Horizon League Championship next week. The Flames are currently seeded fifth with one game remaining.
