CHICAGO – After scoring just 16 points in the first half, the UIC women's basketball team (3-25, 1-16 HL) came to life after halftime, outscoring the Panthers 16-7 in the third quarter to come within eight points, but it wouldn't be enough, as each team scored just five in the fourth quarter to give Milwaukee (15-13, 10-7 HL) the 48-37 victory.
First Half Highlights
- Milwaukee jumped out to a 9-0 lead with a trio of threes at the start. Brittany Byrd broke the streak with back-to-back layups to get the Flames on the board, 9-4.
- Another three for the Panthers and a triple from Jasmine Gaines made it 13-8, but both teams struggled to score in the final two minutes of the first quarter, as a pair of free throws from Milwaukee at the 2:08 mark served as the last score of the first, 15-8.
- Another three for the visitors opened up a 12-0 run for the visitors, pushing their lead into double digits, 29-10, until a layup from Byrd broke the spell, 29-12.
- Kiarra Thompson put up a three for the Flames with just under a minute left in the half, but the Panthers replied with a three of their own, 36-15.
- A free throw from Jasmine Gaines was the final score of the half, as the Flames headed to the locker room down by 20, 36-16. The Panthers ended the first half with seven threes coming from four different players.
Second Half Highlights
- The Flames kept pace with the Panthers through the first five minutes of the second half, but unfortunately were unable to gain any ground, trailing 41-21 with five minutes remaining.
- Tylah Lampley dominated UIC's offense in the third, pulling in 13 of UIC's 16 points in the third quarter in the final 5:29, bringing Milwaukee's lead down to 11, 43-32.
- After making seven triples in the first half, the Panthers were held without a three in the third quarter, as the Flames outscored Milwaukee 16-7. The Panthers were also held to 20 percent shooting, while UIC had its best quarter, making 46.2 percent of its shots.
- Byrd netted a three at the 7:48 mark in the fourth quarter to bring Milwaukee's lead down to just eight, 43-35.
- The Flames kept the Panthers scoreless through the first 7:17 of the fourth quarter, but were only able to gain four points of ground on the visitors in that span. Milwaukee got back to its ways, making a shot from downtown to end its drought, 46-36.
- UIC held Milwaukee to just five points in the fourth quarter, but were only able to score five themselves, giving the Panthers the 11-point victory, 48-37.
Facts & Figures
- Tylah Lampley led UIC's offensive efforts with 15 points for her seventh double-digit scoring effort of the season. The junior also ended the night with six rebounds and one block.
- Brittany Byrd contributed nine points and four rebounds, while also assisting on one, blocking one and stealing two.
- Jada Nneji pulled down an even four rebounds on both the offensive and defensive ends to end the night with eight boards.
- Abreanna Lake handed out four assists to lead the Flames, while also adding three points and three rebounds.
- Milwaukee had a slight edge in shooting, making 29.7 percent of their shots overall compared to 28 percent for the Flames.
- The Panthers outrebounded UIC, 52-34.
- Milwaukee had the slight edge in turnovers, turning the ball over 16 times compared to 17 miscues for the Flames.
