HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. -- UIC wrapped up the 2019 Motor City Cup at Mission Inn Resort Tuesday and the Flames took sixth place after falling to Creighton, 4-1-1. The Flames went 1-2 on the week with the victory coming against Horizon League foe Northern Kentucky on Monday afternoon.
"We fell short against a good Creighton team today, but we were right there in all the matches," said UIC head coach
Mat Blair. "Overall I thought it was a great tournament for us. Stephanie [Mroz] blew out her opponent today. After winning twice yesterday, Shivani [Majmudar] took her match all the way to the 18
th hole after trailing by two at the turn.
"We learned a lot this week and it was good for us to get a couple of extra rounds on the course that hosts our conference championship," said Blair. "Now we'll get ready to take what we learned and bring it with us to Las Vegas as we continue to make improvements."
UIC's biggest individual win Tuesday came when freshman
Stephanie Mroz dominated Creighton's
Sydney Gillespie, 5&4. She won the first and never looked back, building her lead to 5-up after six holes. The advantage ballooned to 6-up after 12 holes, and while Gillespie stayed alive over the next hole, Mroz closed out the battle on the 14
th hole of the day to win, 5&4. It was her second win of the Motor City Cup.
Meghan Kramp halved her match against the Bluejays Tuesday. The senior took the lead on the first hole, but her opponent,Â
Amelia Lee, quickly recovered on the fourth. Her Kramp was 1-up through seven, but Lee fought back to even the ledger at the turn. Kramp won the 10
th and 11
th holes to build her advantage to two. The lead was still 2-up after after 14, but Lee picked up victories on 15 and 16 to square the match. The two matched scored on the final two holes, each picking up a half point for their respective teams.
Playing in the No. 1 position,
Claudia Stampa locked in a tight contest with Creighton's
Katie Allen. Stampa won the first hole and after Allen took the second, the twosome was all square through four. Stampa regained a 1-up lead on the fifth hole and held on until Allen evened the card once again on the ninth. It continued in back-and-forth fashion as Stampa won 10 and Allen took 11. Allen went 1-up on the 12
th hole and never relinquished the lead before holding on 2&1.
Shivani Majmudar never led her match against CU's Caroline Lake, but she remained within striking distance throughout the round. The sophomore was down three holes after eight, but she made a surge to trim the deficit to one after the 10
th hole. Lake snatched a two-hole lead on the 13
th before Majmudar trimmed the deficit back to one with a victory on 16. However, Lake and Majmudar posted identical numbers on on 17 and 18 to help the former hang on.
UIC will next travel to Las Vegas for the Battle at Boulder Creek on Feb. 11-12.
