CHICAGO -- After playing seven of its nine previous games at Credit Union 1 Arena, UIC will embark on a three-game road trip around the Horizon League with the first stop at IUPUI and Indiana Farmers Coliseum on Saturday, Feb. 9. The matinee will commence at 1:00 p.m. ET/12:00 p.m. CT.
UIC (12-12, 6-5 Horizon League) is coming off big back-to-back wins at home last weekend as the Flames took down both Wright State and Northern Kentucky at Credit Union 1 Arena. UIC is the only Horizon League team so far to take down both top two teams from the preseason poll in the same weekend this season. In a nationally-televised game on Feb. 1, the Flames toppled the conference's defending champion Wright State, 67-53. Both
Marcus Ottey and
Tarkus Ferguson tallied 17 points to lead UIC, while its defense allowed a season-low 53 points. The Raiders shot only 28.1 percent from the floor and their 16 field goals were the fewest by a Division I opponent under fourth-year UIC head coach
Steve McClain.
On Sunday, Feb. 3 the Flames led by as many as 11 points, but were behind by one in the final minute following a furious 8-0 run by Northern Kentucky. UIC had the ball out of bounds with five seconds remaining. Ferguson was the triggerman and after his first option was taken away by the defense, he spotted
Jamie Ahale posted up in the right corner in front of the Flames bench. Ferguson fired a pass and Ahale let a defender fly by before gathering and launching the game-winning 3-pointer with 2.5 seconds to go in regulation to propel the home team to a 69-67 triumph.
Ferguson was a catalyst in both victories and he was named Horizon League Player of the Week for the first time in his career. The UIC junior averaged 18.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 6.5 assists in the two wins, while nearly registering his second triple-double of the season behind 19 points, nine rebounds and eight assists against NKU on Sunday.
IUPUI (14-10, 6-5 Horizon League) plays the final game of a five-game homestand on Saturday. Tha Jaguars opened the stretch with wins over Oakland, Detroit Mercy and Northern Kentucky before being tripped up by Wright State on Feb. 3, 79-74. IUPUI is 9-3 at Indiana Farmers Coliseum this season.
The Jaguars defeated the Flames for the first time ever when the two teams got together on Jan. 4 in Chicago. UIC's Ferguson saw a potential game-winning 3-pointer rim out at the buzzer, and IUPUI escaped Credit Union 1 Arena with a 66-64 win.
Godwin Boahen tied his career high with six three-pointers, but the Flames were unable to overcome a season-high 30 points from
Camron Justice and a 61.5 percent shooting night from downtown by the Jaguars.
Saturday's game will be broadcast on
