Slow Start Leads to Loss for UIC

UIC outscores Cleveland State in second half, but falls 74-48

CHICAGO – The UIC women's basketball team (3-20, 1-11 HL) was unable to overcome a hefty first-half deficit, falling 74-48 on Friday evening against Cleveland State (10-13, 7-5 HL). The Flames outscored the Vikings 34-31 in the second half, but were unable to eliminate a nearly 30-point gap from the first half to take the loss.

First Half Highlights
  • Cleveland State sank a three on its first possession, and Jasmine Gaines answered for UIC one minute later with a layup, 3-2. Lampley drove in and found the basket to keep the Flames within one, 5-4, but a trio of Viking free throws put them ahead, 8-4.
  • Cleveland State took the next six unanswered before Kiarra Thompson and Kienya Jones put up back-to-back buckets in a 30 second span, 14-8. The Vikings took another five to end the first period with a 19-8 advantage.
  • Jones was the lone Flame to score in the second quarter, tallying all six UIC points. On the other end of the court the Vikings made 68.8 percent (11-of-16) of their shots in the second, putting up 24 points and taking a 43-14 lead to the locker room at halftime.
Second Half Highlights
  • Tylah Lampley made one from downtown to get UIC on the board in the second half, and was able to draw a foul in the next minute off a fast break attempt and go 2-for-2 at the line. 13 of the next 20 points on either end came at the charity stripe, while the Vikings maintained a 55-29 lead.
  • The Flames had the edge in the third quarter, 17-16, tallying more points in the third quarter alone than in the entire first half.
  • UIC scored 17 points to Cleveland State's 15 in the fourth quarter, but were unable to wipe away the first-half deficit, falling 74-48.
Facts & Figures
  • Kienya Jones led the Flames offense with her second career double-double, tallying 14 points and 11 rebounds. The senior ended the night shooting 50 percent (6-of-12) from the field, while also handing out a pair of assists and making one block.
  • Kiarra Thompson netted 11 points for the Flames, her second-straight double digit performance and fifth on the season.
  • Catera Etheridge was also in double figures, netting 10 points while rebounding four and assisting on three.
  • Jasmine Gaines handed out a personal-best five assists, in addition to  her four points and two rebounds.
  • The Vikings made 37.9 percent (26-of-66) of all their shots on Friday night, while UIC made 28.1 percent (16-of-57). The Flames shot 14.3 percent (2-of-14) from downtown, compared to 17.4 percent (4-of-23) shooting from far for Cleveland State.
  • UIC shot a team season-high 82.4 percent (14-of-17) from the charity stripe, while the Vikings sank 66.7 percent (20-of-30) from the free-throw line.
  • Cleveland State netted 18 points from 20 UIC turnovers, while the Flames got 11 from 13 Viking miscues.
  • The Vikings were also stronger in the paint, 30-22. The visitor's bench was also stronger, 19-9.
