Flames Drop Doubleheader at SIUE

UIC cannot hold four-run lead in nightcap

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – UIC dropped a pair of close games at SIUE on Friday, falling in a doubleheader by scores of 3-2 (8) and 6-4 (7) at the Simmons Complex.

Jacob Key pitched a complete game, 7.2 innings, in the opener for UIC (1-7). He struck out nine Cougars and retired 16 consecutive SIUE (3-5) hitters between the second and seventh innings.  The home team plated the winning run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth.

The Flames got off to a fast start in the second game. Dominic Smith hit a first-inning grand slam, but UIC surrendered six unanswered runs as the Cougars went on to win, 6-4.

How It Happened – Game 1
  • SIUE put the first run of the day on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning. With two down, Brock Weimer poked a double to right-center field to score a Cougar and gain a 1-0 lead.
  • The Flames answered right back with a tally in the top of the second. Dominic Smith singled to center field and he came around to score from first base with two outs when Joshua Figueroa hit a RBI-double of his own to right-center field.
  • On the strength of two more doubles, the home team took the lead right back with a run in the bottom of the second, but the Flames evened the ledger once again in the top of the third. UIC loaded the bases when Matt Bottcher singled, Derrick Patrick doubled and Scott Ota was hit by a pitch. With Thomas Smart at the dish, SIUE's Collin Baumgartner uncorked a wild pitch that plated Bottcher and evened the score at two runs apiece.
  • After the one-out RBI double in the bottom of the second inning, Key dominated the Cougars for the next several frames. The junior retired the next 16 Cougars in order before a harmless two-out single in the bottom of the seventh. Key bounced back after that to get a fly ball to Smith in left field to end the inning and send it to extras.
  • The Flames stranded a runner in scoring position in the top of the eighth, but the Cougars did not make the same mistake in bottom half. Brady Bunten doubled to the base of the wall in right-center field to open the frame. A failed pickoff attempt with one out, the first error charged to either team, moved Bunten to third base. Jordan Ross hit a ball to right field that was caught by UIC's Ota, but it was deep enough to allow Bunten to tag up and score the game-winning run.
How It Happened – Game 2
  • The Flames attacked the Cougars and freshman starting pitcher Cameron Prayer right away in the top of the first inning. Chris Papapietro and Ota singled before Thomas Smart drew a base on balls to load the bases with one away. UIC's left fielder Smith quickly unloaded them when he launched his first home run of the season, a grand slam, over the wall to tack four quick runs on the scoreboard.
  • SIUE put two runs on the board with the help of two throwing errors by the Flames to cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the second inning.
  • The third and fourth innings were scoreless on both sides before the Cougars took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the fifth. Dustin Woodcock drove in a run before another tally scored an unearned run on a passed ball. Garrett Carmichael pushed across two more runs with a two-out single.
  • UIC stranded a runner in scoring position in both the sixth and seventh innings, but could not score to tie the game or take the lead.
Notable
  • Jacob Key's nine strikeouts in the first game were the most by a UIC pitcher in a game this season. It also marked the third time in his career that he fanned at least nine hitters, but the first time doing so without issuing a walk.
  • Joey Fredrickson struck out a career-high six hitters in game two. He entered the game with four combined strikeouts in his first two starts.
  • Dominic Smith has hit safely in five consecutive games. The senior went 2-for-8 during the doubleheader.
  • Thomas Smart's eighth-inning double in the first game extended his streak of reaching base safely to a team-high seven games. He also walked and scored a run in the nightcap to push the streak to all eight games.
  • The first game was UIC's first extra-inning game of the season as it was only scheduled to be a seven-inning affair. The Flames were 0-2 in extra innings last season. It was also the first game decided by one run. UIC was 7-6 in one-run games a year ago.
On Deck
  • UIC is slated to play at Northwestern on Tuesday, March 5.
  • The Flames will look to play their home opener on Friday, March 8 against Chicago State.
