Regular Season Finale Sends UIC to Detroit Mercy

Flames seeking to secure fifth seed in upcoming #HLMBB Tournament

3/1/2019 12:11:00 PM

DETROIT -- UIC will cap its 2018-19 regular season and try to lock down the fifth seed in the upcoming 2019 Little Caesars Horizon League Basketball Championship on Saturday, March 2, when it visits Detroit Mercy at 4 p.m. ET/3 p.m. CT.

The Flames (15-15, 9-8 Horizon League) can finish the regular season as high as tied for third place with a win at Calihan Hall, plus victories by IUPUI at Oakland and Northern Kentucky at Green Bay. If there is a three-way tie for third place at the end of the weekend, however, UIC cannot be seeded higher than fifth based on its head-to-head records against the Golden Grizzlies and Phoenix. The Flames cannot fall below the sixth seed, and would only slot there if Detroit Mercy (11-18, 8-9 Horizon League), IUPUI and Youngstown State all win on Saturday. Oakland and IUPUI meet at the same time as the Flames and Titans, while YSU plays host to Cleveland State at 5 p.m. CT.

UIC is seeking to collect at least 10 wins in League play for the second consecutive season under head coach Steve McClain. It will be the seventh time reaching double digits in the conference win column since the Flames joined the MCC (Horizon League) in 1994.

The Titans (11-18, 8-9 Horizon League) have secured their spot in the conference tournament, but are also jockeying for position on the final day of the regular season. Detroit Mercy topped IUPUI on Thursday night, 87-85. During the win, freshman Antoine Davis set the NCAA record for most 3-pointers by a freshman, surpassing Stephen Curry's mark of 122 in 2007-08. He tallied 20 points, while senior Josh McFolley, who play his last game at Calihan Hall on Saturday, led all players with 23 points.

UIC won the first meeting against Detroit Mercy at Credit Union 1 Arena on Jan. 24, 79-67. The Flames never trailed in that game and led by as many as 24 points. Jordan Blount boosted the squad with his first double-double of the season that included 19 points and 10 rebounds.

Saturday's game can be seen on ESPN+. More statistics, notes and information surrounding the upcoming game can be found by clicking the UIC Game Notes (PDF) linked in the blue box above.
