NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The UIC softball team (7-14) was upended by host Belmont (14-8) on Sunday morning, falling 5-0 in its final game of the Belmont Invitational. The Bruins' four runs in the top of the third was all it would need, as the Flames were held without a run for just the second time this season.
UIC finishes the Belmont Invitational with a 2-3 showing, dropping a pair to Lipscomb in day one before taking wins over Purdue Fort Wayne and Belmont yesterday in day two.
Skylee James led UIC's offensive efforts, tallying six hits, four RBI and two runs in UIC's five games.
Lexi Watts followed close with five hits, five runs, and two RBI.
Kayla Wedl and
Cassie Kaelber each collected four hits, while
Alyssa Griman (3),
Schyler Ek (2) and
Tara McElligott (2) also had multi-hit showings.
Game Highlights
- The Bruins utilized four hits and a UIC error in the top of the third to take an early 4-0.
- Belmont started the sixth off with a single, and a fielder's choice and an error followed to put runners on second and third. A single brought a runner across, giving the Bruins a 5-0 lead.
- UIC had a chance to score in the bottom of the sixth, as Watts put down a one-out bunt and moved to second on a groundout. James battled for a walk, but Wedl flied out to right field to end the opportunity for the Flames.
- McElligott slapped a one-out single up the middle in UIC's final at bat, but was out at second on a fielder's choice from Claire Crane. Ek stepped up the plate and grounded the ball at the shortstop and was able to outrun the throw to first, but she was out at second on an Emily Wetzel fielder's choice to end the game.

- The Bruins put up eight hits to UIC's five. McElligott paced the offense with two hits, and Watts, Crane and Ek made up the remaining three.
- Karissa Frazier got the start and pitched 2.0 innings, allowing two earned runs off two hits, while striking out four. Marley Hanlon came on in the third and pitched the remaining 5.0 innings, giving up two earned runs off six hits while also striking out four.
