CHICAGO – The UIC women's tennis team (9-4) will carry its seven-match win streak into the start of Horizon League play, facing a pair of conference foes this weekend at home inside XS Tennis. The Flames will be facing Detroit Mercy on Friday, March 22 before ending the weekend with Oakland on Saturday, March 23. Both matches are set to begin at 1 p.m. CT.
The Flames are hot after a 4-3 comeback win against Western Michigan on March 14. After falling into a 3-1 hole, UIC fought to a 3-3 tie, when
Karyna Bihel took over with a big 2-6, 7-6 (1), 6-4 win at No. 2 to put the Flames on top for good.
Rachel Le Comber won her fifth-straight singles match in the win over the Broncos, upping her career wins total to 70. The senior ranks 10th all-time in UIC history, and is now just three wins away from taking over Zvjezdana Malesevi's place in ninth.
Nell Arendt continues to dominate the No. 6 spot for UIC, winning her last six singles matches, all by way of straight sets.
Karyna Bihel and
Lejla Colic are riding respective three-match win streaks in singles, packing a No. 1 and No. 2 punch for the Flames.
The Flames are 19-14 in doubles matches so far this dual season, taking the doubles point in eight of their 13 contests. Of those eight doubles points, the Flames went on to win the match on seven occasions.
Detroit Mercy heads into Horizon League play with a 7-5 non-conference record, most recently taking a 5-2 loss against Chicago State. The Flames own a 25-3 advantage all-time against the Titans, taking last year's meeting by a final tally of 6-1.
Oakland racked up a 6-6 record during non-conference action, dropping a close 4-3 decision to Toledo on Saturday (March 16). UIC has taken four out of the five meetings between the two teams all-time, taking the edge over the Golden Grizzlies last year, 4-3.
UIC will hit the road next weekend to continue Horizon League play against Northern Kentucky and Wright State.
