Flames Win Extra-Innings Battle with Butler, 4-2

UIC secures fifth-straight win

INDIANAPOLIS – The UIC softball team (12-14) secured its fifth-straight win on Wednesday afternoon with a 4-2 (8) extra-innings win over Butler (11-20). The Flames erased a two-run deficit in the top of the fourth with a pair of runs and tacked on another two runs in the top of the eighth off a Tara McElligott single and Skylee James sacrifice fly to come away with the win.

Game Highlights
  • Butler got one run across in their first at bat, as its leadoff single came around to score after a sacrifice bunt and UIC error, 1-0.
  • A pair of one-out singles advanced to second and third on a sacrifice bunt, and the next batter walked to load the bases for the Bulldogs in the bottom of the second. Another single brought in the runner from third to extend Butler's lead, 2-0.
  • The Flames tied the game in the top of the fourth with a pair of runs. James and Kayla Wedl led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Both batters advanced on a sacrifice bunt from Jasmine Willis, and both came across the plate on a Butler fielding error off the bat of Cassie Kaelber.
  • Both teams struggled to score in the next three innings, forcing the game into extra innings.
  • Claire Crane drew a leadoff walk and pinch-hitting Alyssa Griman was hit by a pitch to put two on for the Flames in the top of the eighth. Lexi Watts laid down a sacrifice bunt to move them over, and McElligott singled through the left side to break the tie and bring Crane home. James followed with a sacrifice fly out in center, allowing Griman to tag up and come home for the insurance run, 4-2.
