Bats Stay Hot as UIC Thumps Milwaukee, 21-6

Flames post season highs in hits and runs Saturday

MILWAUKEE – For the second time in as many days UIC built a sizable lead over the Milwaukee Panthers and maintained the advantage throughout en route to a 21-6 series-clinching victory at Henry Aaron Field.

The Flames (10-11, 6-2 Horizon League) scored nine runs in the first two innings on Friday afternoon and on Saturday UIC plated 11 runs in the first five innings to put Milwaukee (13-10, 4-4 Horizon League) in a hole it could not dig out of. The Flames scored at least four runs in four of nine innings and they scored at least once in seven of the nine frames.

Offensively, freshman Ryan Hampe continued to rake with a career-high five hits, including two doubles and three RBI. Every member of UIC's starting lineup had at least one hit or drove in one run.

While the bats kept building the lead, Joey Fredrickson kept the Panthers in check. He opened the afternoon with four scoreless innings before Milwaukee pushed across a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth.

How It Happened
  • For the second consecutive day, UIC started the game with two runs in the top of the first inning. Saturday it took only two batters to get the first run as leadoff man Matt Bottcher scored from first base on a double from Ryan Lin-Peistrup. Later, Thomas Smart knocked in Scott Ota with an RBI groundout.
  • The Flames added a run in the third when Hampe doubled with two outs and scored on Smart's single up the middle.
  • David Becker began the fourth inning with his second home run of the series. Hampe brought home two more runs with another two-bagger and Ota scored on a wild pitch in the frame. It was the first of back-to-back four-run innings as the fifth saw UIC scored four runs on four hits with the help of a Milwaukee error. Joshua Figueroa had a sacrifice fly in the frame, two runs scored on the miscue and Ota drove in Lin-Peistrup with a base hit to center field. That knock put the Flames ahead, 11-0.
  • Milwaukee hit a couple of unearned runs off Fredrickson in the bottom of the fifth, but a few frames later, UIC had its most destructive inning of the day, scoring six times in the top of the seventh to stretch the lead to 15 runs. Lin-Peistrup doubled in Derrick Patrick, Hampe singled home Bottcher and Lin-Peistrup scored on Smart's single through the left side. The next three runs came with the bases loaded when Figueroa was hit by a pitch and Patrick and Bottcher walked.
  • Chasing 15 runs, the Panthers answered for three back in the bottom of the seventh to claw within 12 thanks to a two-run home run from Matt Quartel and a pinch-hit homer from Zach Nogalski.
  • For the fourth time in the game, UIC scored at least four runs in the top of the eighth. Figueroa notched a two-run double in the inning and pinch hitter Chris Papapietro brought him home on his own two-base hit to left-centerfield. The Flames also scored on a fielder's choice in the stanza.
Notable
  • The Flames had season highs in both runs (21) and hits (21) on Saturday. It is the first time eclipsing 20 runs since scoring 23 times in a 21-run victory at Youngstown State on April 21, 2017. UIC had not collected at least 20 hits in a contest since March 14, 2018 against Northern Illinois.
  • UIC is averaging 13.0 runs per game during the current three-game winning streak.
  • The Flames doubled seven times against Milwaukee, eclipsing the previous season-best total by three. Over the course of the current three-game winning streak, UIC has 13 doubles and four home runs.
  • Ryan Hampe's career-high five hits marked the first five-hit performance for a UIC player since April 11, 2017, when Rob Calabrese went 5-for-6 with two home runs, a double and eight RBI at Northern Illinois.
  • Joshua Figueroa posted a career-high four RBI at Milwaukee. He joins Dominic Smith as the two Flames with four-RBI efforts this spring.
  • Scott Ota had three hits for the fourth time this season as he raised his batting average to .342. He also scored three runs in the third consecutive game and the fourth time overall in 2019.
  • Noah Masa had his first career at-bat Saturday as a pinch hitter in the ninth. The pitcher, and team leader, is scheduled to undergo career-ending surgery on Monday.
  • Joey Fredrickson, who collected his third win on the hill, has made a quality start in all three outings against Horizon League foes this season.  Milwaukee scored five runs against him in 7.0 IP, but only three were earned.
  • Milwaukee's 14 hits on Saturday were the most surrendered by the Flames in a single game this season.
On Deck
  • The Flames and Panthers will conclude the three-game series at Henry Aaron Field on Sunday at 1 p.m.
