UIC Shuts out IUPUI Twice for Series Sweep

Flames defeat Jags 7-0 in game one; 11-0 in game two

INDIANAPOLIS – The UIC softball team (20-19, 10-2 HL) completed its third Horizon League sweep of the season on Wednesday, grabbing a pair of shutout victories over IUPUI (14-32, 8-8 HL). The Flames took a 7-0 win in game one before finishing the day with an 11-0 (6) run-rule victory behind quality complete-game performances from pitchers Jennah Speth and Allie Trudeau.

Game One Highlights
  • After three scoreless innings, Alyssa Griman broke open the scoring in the top of the fourth with a two-run homer to center, giving the Flames a 2-0 lead.
  • IUPUI posed its biggest threat in the bottom of the fourth, putting two on with one out off a single and a UIC error, but the next two batters went down by way of a strikeout and a grounder to end the threat.
  • UIC added another pair of runs in the top of the sixth. Lexi Watts led off with a double and Kayla Wedl sent one over the fence in left, pushing UIC's lead to four.
  • Wedl extended the lead again in the seventh with a three-run shot to left center. Cassie Kaelber and Lexi Watts scored on the long ball, after getting on by way of a single and an error, respectively.
Game One Facts & Figures
  • The Flames outhit the Jags in game one, 9-2. Wedl led with a 3-for-4 performance, tabbing five RBI off her two home runs. Griman also finished with two hits and two RBI, coming off her long ball in the fourth. Watts, Skylee James, Emily Wetzel and Kaelber each finished with one hit.
  • Jennah Speth was lights out in the circle, containing IUPUI to a mere two hits in her second complete-game shutout of the season.
Game Two Highlights
  • Wedl batted an infield single in the top of the first, stole second and came around to score after tagging up on a fly out and advancing home on an IUPUI throwing error to put UIC ahead 1-0 after its first at bat.
  • Wedl had a similar trip around the bases in the third, singling, stealing second, tagging up on a fly and coming home on a wild pitch, to put the Flames ahead by two.
  • Kaelber singled, Schyler Ek walked and Watts reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases for the Flames in the top of the fourth. James drew a walk to bring in one and Griman followed with a double to bring in two more, 5-0.
  • Ek singled and was replaced on the bags by Watts on a fielder's choice to start off the top of the sixth. Wedl singled to right and James cleared the bags with a bomb to center, 8-0. Tara McElligott put a sharp chopper at the shortstop for a hit and Wetzel walked to put two on again, but this time it was Claire Crane who cleared the bags, making it 11-0.
  • The Jags got a leadoff double in the sixth and put another one on with a hit by pitch. A fielder's choice and an interference call gave the Flames two outs with a runner on first, but back-to-back singles loaded the bases for IUPUI. A slow-rolling ball to second was handled by Kaelber and handed off to Wetzel at first to get the final out and secure the second shutout of the day for the Flames.
Game Two Facts & Figures
  • The Flames tabbed 12 hits to IUPUI's four. Wedl once again went 3-for-4, scoring three runs. Griman, McElligott and Kaelber also finished with multi-hit showings. James, Crane and Ek made up UIC's remaining three hits. James ended the day with another four RBI, while Crane drove in three. Griman took home the remaining two RBI.
  • Allie Trudeau contained IUPUI to just four hits in her sixth complete-game shutout win of the season. The junior allowed just four hits while striking out four to improve to 9-8 on the season.
