HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. -- UIC teed off at the 2019 Horizon League Women's Golf Championship early Sunday morning and after 18 holes the Flames sit in fifth place among the conference's eight squads. UIC's lineup posted a score of 38-over par, 328, to begin the tournament.
Freshman
Stephanie Mroz and senior
Claudia Stampa each shot 8-over par 81 to post the lowest numbers for UIC. The pair is in a group that is tied for 15
th place after the first round of play. Mroz had one of three birdies for the Flames as she needed only three strokes on the par-4 10
th hole. Stampa closed her round by writing in a four on the par-5 18
th hole, while
Meghan Kramp had UIC's first birdie on the par-3 second hole. Kramp shot 11-over par, 84, and she is tied for 25
th on the individual leaderboard.
As a team, UIC ranks third in the field in par-5 scoring through 18 holes with an average score of 5.36 on the five lengthiest holes on the Las Colinas Course at Mission Inn Resort. Individually, Mroz and Stampa were in a group of seven golfers that tied for third place in the field by playing even-par on those holes. Conversely, the Flames struggled to score on the par-3 holes. UIC shot a combined 14-over par with an average score of 3.70 on those four holes.
Kelly Sterling was the lone member of the team to shoot par or better on the par-3's on Sunday. Sterling shot 9-over par, 82, and she is close behind Mroz and Stampa, tied for 18
th place.
The Flames are three shots in front of Detroit Mercy, the team they were paired with Sunday. UIC is six strokes in front of Green Bay and nine up on Northern Kentucky. The Flames are seven shots in back of Youngstown State and 10 behind Cleveland State. IUPUI and Oakland are tied for the lead after one round after both teams shot 19-over par, 311.
UIC will begin the second round on Monday, April 22 at 8:30 a.m. CT. The Flames will once again be paired with the Titans.
