UIC Edged at Northwestern

Flames and Wildcats split season series

EVANSTON, Ill. – UIC scratched out nine hits on Tuesday afternoon in a nonconference matchup at Northwestern, but the Flames left six runners on base and pushed across only one run as they fell to Wildcats, 6-1.

Ryan Hampe drove in the lone run for UIC (18-16) on a sacrifice fly in the top of the third inning. Chris Papapietro and Thomas Smart had two hits apiece, while Scott Ota extended his hitting streak to a team-high 19 games.

Northwestern (17-20) scored twice in the first inning, twice in the seventh and twice in the eighth to pull out its first victory against the Flames at Rockey Miller Park since April 22, 2015.

How It Happened
  • Northwestern started the scoring with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. Willie Bourbon and David Dunn drove in one run apiece before the Flames turned an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play.
  • UIC cut into the deficit during the top of the third inning. Ryan Lin-Peistrup, Chris Papapietro and Scott Ota all singled to load the bases before Ryan Hampe hit a sacrifice fly to left-center field to plate Lin-Peistrup. The Flames nearly tied the game when Derrick Patrick legged out an infield single, but Papapietro was cut down trying to score from second base to end the threat.
  • Both pitching staffs and defenses held the opposition in check until the Wildcats struck for a couple of runs in the bottom of the seventh.  Bourbon hit a sacrifice fly before Alex Erro scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-1 in favor of the home team. Northwestern added two more runs in the eighth on a home run from Leo Kaplan.
Notable
  • Scott Ota extended his hitting streak to a team-high 19 games with his third-inning single. He has hit safely in 27 of UIC's 34 games this season.
  • Chris Papapietro and Thomas Smart each led the Flames with two hits. It was the third multi-hit game of the season for Papapietro and the eighth for Smart, who was playing in his hometown of Evanston on Tuesday.
  • Northwestern's 11 hits were the most for an opponent since Northern Illinois had 10 on April 9. In the first meeting against the Flames on April 3, the Wildcats had only four hits.
  • UIC moved to 3-1 in non-conference games during the month of April.
  • The Flames are 7-3 in the last 10 meetings against Northwestern.
On Deck
  • UIC will jump back into Horizon League play on Friday night at Wright State.
  • The Raiders took two out of three games when the two teams hooked up at Granderson Stadium in March.
