HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. -- UIC saved its best round at the 2019 Horizon League Women's Golf Championship for its last Tuesday as the Flames improved by nine strokes to shoot 26-over par, 318, on the day and 97-over par, 973, for the 54-hole tournament.
This 2018-19 squad tied the 2017-18 Flames for the lowest 54-hole total at a conference tournament. The 18-hole total posted on Tuesday marked the fourth best of the season for UIC.
"I'm really proud of this team all the way around," said UIC head coach
Mat Blair. "To come in seeded as one the bottom two teams and go out and finish fifth by five shots is pretty impressive. The girls rose to the challenge and left it all on the course.
Individually, UIC was led throughout the week by senior
Claudia Stampa. She finished ninth overall at 18-over par, 237. On Tuesday she shot 5-over par, 78, for the second time in as many days. Her third round got off to a tumultuous start and she was 6-over par through the first four holes. She stormed back and birdied two of the next three holes before making par on the three after that. Stampa added an eagle on the par-5 12
th hole and by the time she finished her round, she shot 1-under over the final 14 holes of her collegiate career. She was one of five players to make an eagle during this tournament, and only the fourth player in program history to do so.
Stampa, who matched her season's-best total of 237 for the third time, was one of the tournament's best players on the five par-5 holes scattered along the Las Colinas Course at Mission Inn Resort. She was one of three players tied atop the leaderboard in par-5 scoring at 1-over par for the tournament with an average of 5.07 strokes her hole. One of the two players Stampa tied with in that category was teammate
Meghan Kramp.
Kramp and fellow senior
Kelly Sterling each posted their lowest scores of the tournament on Tuesday. Kramp shot 7-over par, 80, and Sterling came in at 8-over par, 81. Kramp tallied birdies on par-5 holes No. 5 and No. 12, while Sterling registered her own birdie on the par-4 16
th hole Tuesday. Sterling, who finished tied for 19
th, led the Flames with 32 pars during the 54-hole tournament. Kramp ended her day tied for 23
rd.
Stephanie Mroz made the second-largest leap of any player in the field Tuesday, ascending nine spots on the leaderboard to finish tied for 27
th. The UIC freshman shot 6-over, 79, to wrap up her first Horizon League Championship experience. Another underclassmen, sophomore
Shivani Majmudar, finished 38
th.
IUPUI won the tournament for the second time in as many seasons. The Jaguars had three individuals in the top five, but individual medalist honors went to Maddie Zack of Oakland. She shot 8-over par, 227, for the tournament.
