CHICAGO – The UIC softball team (28-20, 18-3 HL) clinched its fifth-straight Horizon League regular season title on Saturday with a 10-3 win over Youngstown State (22-27, 10-9 HL). The win gave the Flames their second-straight series sweep, while also pushing their win streak to eight games.
With the regular season title in hand, UIC reserves the No. 1 seed and the right to host the Horizon League Tournament May 8-11.
Game One Highlights
- Lexi Watts opened things up with a single to the pitcher, and Kayla Wedl followed with her 13th long ball of the season, quickly putting the Flames up 2-0. Walks for Skylee James, Tara McElligott, Claire Crane and Emily Wetzel brought in another run, giving UIC a 3-0 advantage after its first at bat.
- The Flames tacked on another four runs in their next at bat, growing their lead to seven. Watts reached on a YSU error and made it all the way to third with back-to-back steals. Wedl landed on second after another Penguin miscue, while Watts easily made it home. Alyssa Griman put one over the fence in right center to drive in a pair, and McElligott followed with her eighth bomb of the year, 7-0.
- UIC's tacked on another three runs in the third to push its lead into double figures, 10-0. Watts batted a one-out double, moved to third on a YSU error off the bat of Wedl and scored on a single up the middle from James. A pass ball allowed Wedl to score and James to move to third, and a two-base hit off McElligott's bat brought in James.
- Schyler Ek led off the fourth with a single to left, and she took second after a wild pitch. Wedl singled to the shortstop, allowing Ek to pull up into third, and a fielder's choice on the James at bat brought her in, 11-0.
- Crane drew another walk with one out in the top of the fifth, and she made it all the way home on the first career triple for Ek, 12-0. Kaelber batted her in with a single up the middle in the next at bat, pushing UIC's lead to 13-0.
- The Penguins got a pair of base runners in the bottom of the fifth, but the Flames kept them from scoring to complete the shutout victory.
Game One Facts & Figures
- The Flames recorded 11 hits to Youngstown State's five. Watts, Wedl, McEllligott and Ek finished with a pair of hits, while James, Griman and Kaelber each recorded one.
- Both James and Wedl extended their career-high hit streaks, with James successfully hitting in the last 18 and Wedl recording a hit in the last 16.
- Wedl, Griman and McElligott drove in two runs apiece. James, Wetzel, Ek and Kaelber each drove in one.
- Marley Hanlon got the start in the circle for the Flames, dealing 5.0 innings and allowing just five hits while striking out four to improve to 6-5 on the season.
Game Two Highlights
- The Penguins got their first lead of the series in the bottom of the second off two UIC errors and a wild pitch, 2-0.
- UIC responded with four runs in their next at bat to claim a 4-2 lead. Wetzel was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, and she was replaced on the bases by Kaelber on a fielder's choice. Watts reached on a Penguin error, and Wedl moved both runners over with a sacrifice bunt. James put a no-doubter over the fence in left to put the Flames ahead, 3-2, and Griman followed with a homer over the opposite side of the fence in right, 4-2.
- Youngstown State got a run in the bottom of the third after two singles, a walk and a hit-by-pitch, 4-3.
- The Flames got the run back in the top of the fifth after Watts walked, stole second and scored on a dribbler up the middle from Griman, 5-3.
- Claire Crane led off the sixth with a solo home run to right center, allowing the Flames to double up on the Penguins, 6-3.
- UIC's offense sparked up again in the top of the seventh with four hits and a walk. Wedl led off with her 14th home run of the season, sending the ball sailing over the fence in left. James singled, Griman drew a walk and McElligott singled to load up the bags with Flames. A wild pitch allowed James to touch home, and a double for Crane brought in Griman and McElligott, 10-3.
Game Two Facts & Figures
- UIC registered 10 hits to Youngstown State's four. McElligott led the way with a 3-for-4 showing, while James, Griman and Crane also recording multi-hit showings. Wedl took home UIC's remaining tab with her solo shot in the seventh.
- Crane and James each drove in a trio of runs to lead the Flames, while Griman collected two RBI and Wedl took home one.
- James and Wedl once again extended their hit streaks, with James extending her streak to 19 games and Wedl pushing her streak to 17 games.
- Jennah Speth got the start in the circle, pitching 2.1 innings and allowing two earned runs off two hits. Karissa Frazier dealt the remaining 4.2 innings to take the win, allowing just two hits in her time in the circle.
